Want to visit some Mexico Pueblos Magicos?

Smart choice! The pueblos magicos, which means “magic towns,” are some of the best places to visit in Mexico.

You might say I have a bit of an obsession with visiting pueblos magicos in Mexico. To date, I’ve been to 40 of them, and I have to say — some are better than others.

I have been living in Mexico since 2018, so it’s easy for me to visit pueblos magicos. If I don’t really like the pueblo magico I visit, it’s not a big deal.

However, for people visiting from other countries, it is a big deal. With only a limited amount of travel time, I know you only want to visit the best Mexico pueblos mágicos.

Hence this article! In it, I’m highlighting my list of the Top 10 best pueblos magicos in Mexico for you — so you know which ones to add to your bucket list.

Pueblos Magicos Guide & FAQ

What is a pueblo magico (and why are they important)?

The Mexico Pueblo Magico Program highlights small towns that have “magical” qualities — like history, culture, architecture, folklore and natural wonders.

As small towns as opposed to the top tourist destinations like Cancun, Mexico City and Cabo, many haven’t heard of the off the beaten path pueblos magicos.

That’s why the Mexican government’s Pueblo Magico Program was created — so visitors would be able to discover these hidden gems that are worth checking out.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

How do towns become pueblos magicos in Mexico?

There are a few steps to apply, starting with the town forming a Pueblo Magico Committee to handle the application process.

Within the application, there are FOUR basic requirements to be considered for pueblo magico status:

  • The town’s population must be at least 5,000 residents.
  • It must be easy to reach it from a major city in Mexico via well-maintained roadways if you’re driving, or public transportation if you aren’t.
  • The town must have something “magical” about it that visitors want to experience for at least 1-2 days.
  • There must be quality lodging options so visitors can stay the night.
Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

How many pueblos magicos are there?

As of the most-recent revision to the official list on August 1, 2023, there are currently 177 pueblos magicos in Mexico.

However, the answer to the How many pueblos magicos are there in Mexico? question changes depending on when you ask it.

Every few years, the Secretary of Tourism in Mexico reevaluates the list. Some towns are added, while some get removed if they are no longer meeting the qualifications.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

Which were the first pueblos magicos?

Huasca de Ocampo in Hidalgo, Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosi, and Tepoztlan in Morelos were the first three when the Mexico Pueblos Magicos Program started in 2001.

Of the three, Huasca de Ocampo is officially known as the first Mexico pueblo magico. It even has a plaque in the town verifying that.

Today, the list has grown to 177 pueblos magicos in Mexico. As it’s reevaluated every so often, I suspect the list will continue to grow in the coming years.

My Top 10 Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

1. San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas

san cristobal de las casas, one of the most unique places in mexico

🤔 Why is San Cristobal de las Casas worth visiting?

One of the most-visited Mexico pueblos magicos, San Cristóbal de las Casas boasts colorful colonial architecture, gorgeous nature, and a friendly bohemian vibe.

Known for beautiful textiles, you can shop for them in the local mercados (markets), or see them on display at Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya (Mayan Textile Museum).

Outside of town, don’t miss the surrounding nature like the Cañón del Sumidero Canyon. This massive canyon has walls 3,300-feet-tall (1,000 m) in some areas.

A bit further out, there’s amazing waterfalls like El Chiflon, Aguas Azules, and Misol-Ha, as well as the massive lakes at Lagos de Montebello.

🚗 How to visit San Cristobal de las Casas mexico

You’re sure to love this boat tour of Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas state as much as I did.

There’s no airport here, so you’ll want to fly into Tuxtla Gutierrez International Airport in Tuxtla. This is the capital of Chiapas, Mexico.

From there, you can rent a car and drive to San Cristobal, take a taxi, or take the colectivo. There are some private shuttle companies too.

I took the colectivo; it was simple and inexpensive. Colectivos are small shared vans, and one of the cheapest ways to get around in Mexico.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

2. Bacalar, Quintana Roo

woman on a swing in the water in laguna bacalar lake mexico
The blue water of Bacalar Lagoon has earned it the nickname, “the Maldives of Mexico.”

🤔 Why is Bacalar worth visiting?

Bacalar pueblo magico is a quiet town in the southern part of Quintana Roo state, which is one of the three states that make up Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

It became so popular because of Bacalar Lake, AKA the Lake of Seven Colors.

The second biggest freshwater lake in Mexico, the best way to experience it is on this Bacalar boat tour where you’ll visit sites like Canal de Los Piratas (Pirate’s Channel).

You’ll also want to check out the balnearios (beach clubs) like Los Rapidos Bacalar, and swim in the Bacalar cenotes, like Cenote Azul and Cenote Cocalitos.

🚗 How to visit Bacalar Mexico

mexico overwater bungalows in bacalar, mexico
Bacalar is home to some of the best overwater bungalows in Mexico.

The closest airport to Bacalar is Chetumal International Airport. Located in the town of Chetumal, there aren’t direct flights from the U.S., so this isn’t a convenient option.

For most visitors, it’s easiest to fly into Tulum International Airport or Cancun International Airport, and then rent a car or take the ADO bus to Bacalar.

When coming from Cancun, I always take this private shuttle.

It’s about a 4-hour drive, but after flying to Cancun and dealing with the stress airports and flights inevitably bring, it’s easier to book the shuttle than deal with ground transportation.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

3. Teotihuacan, Estado de Mexico

Teotihuacan Hot Air Balloon Tour from Mexico City
One of the best things to do in Mexico City, don’t skip the Ruins of Teotihuacan.

🤔 Why is Teotihuacan worth visiting?

Teotihuacán (pronounced tay-oh-tee-wok-con) is one of the 35 Mexico UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and also one of the most important ruins in Mexico.

The origins of this mysterious site are unknown, though it has connections to various ancient civilizations, including the Toltecs, Aztecs and Teotihuacanos.

With so much history, you’ll want to book one of these top-rated Teotihuacan tours so you have a knowledgeable guide to explain it all.

The site sees about two million annual visitors each year and many head there to climb the Teotihuacán pyramids: Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon and Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl.

🚗 How to visit Teotihuacan Mexico

One of the best things to do in Mexico City, don’t miss the Ruins of Teotihuacan.

One of the most popular day trips from Mexico City, you have several options for how to get to Teotihuacan Ruins.

  1. The easiest way is to book one of these best Teotihuacan tours.
  2. Looking to go on the hot air balloons as well as see the ruins? Check out these best Teotihuacan hot air balloon tours.
  3. If you’re renting a car, you can of course just drive yourself.
  4. To take the bus to Teotihuacan or public transport, this article lists all your Mexico City to Teotihuacan options to go on your own.
Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

4. Taxco, Guerrero

taxi in taxco, mexico (vocho, WV bug)
Taxco has narrow, cobblestone streets and winding alleyways lined with gorgeous colonial buildings.

🤔 Why is Taxco worth visiting?

Taxco de Alarcón (usually just called Taxco) is a delightful hillside town in Guerrero, Mexico — and the only pueblo magico in Guerrero state.

Its Parroquia de Santa Prisca Church is among the most beautiful churches in Mexico. However, Taxco is best known as one of the top Mexico silver mining towns.

In town, you can sometimes see artisans hard at work in their tiny talliers (workshops), and you can buy silver directly from them.

Semana Santa (Holy Week), the week leading up to Easter, is a special time to visit Taxco, Mexico.

It is one of the most important Mexican holidays, but Taxco has one of the country’s most elaborate celebrations (though some describe it as gruesome).

🚗 How to visit Taxco Mexico

The famous Templo de Santa Prisca de Taxco church in downtown.

When I visited, it was on this Mexico City to Taxco tour. It was nice not to have to drive to Taxco, as it’s about four hours each way.

I highly recommend going on a tour versus going on your own, because in full disclosure, Guerrero state isn’t one of the safest places in Mexico for visitors.

Now, Taxco is considered safe, and many people visit daily. I went with three friends, and we all felt perfectly safe the whole time — but to err on the side of caution, go with this group tour.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

5. Xilitla, San Luis Potosi

xilitla mexico surrealist gardens of edward james AKA las pozas

🤔 Why is Xilitla worth visiting?

The oldest town in San Luis Potosí, Xilitla (pronounced he-leet-la or she-leet-la; I’ve heard both) dates back to the 16th Century.

Though there are several things to do in Xilita, the main draw is the Surrealist Gardens of Edward James (AKA Los Pozas, which means The Wells or The Pools).

Inspired by his love of surrealist art, eccentric Englishman Edward James began building his dream home. Sadly, he passed away before completion.

For many, you visit Xilitla as part of a trip to La Huasteca Potosina. This lush Mexico region is famed for beautiful nature, particularly its waterfalls.

🚗 How to visit Xilitla Mexico

tamul is one of the best waterfalls in huasteca potosina
Cascada Tamul is one of the best Huasteca Potosina waterfalls, and located in the same region of Mexico as Xilitla.

My husband and I spent a week in Huasteca Potosina, visiting all the waterfalls, Xilitla, the Surrealist Garden of Edward James, and more. It was an amazing trip!

When we went, we rented a car in San Luis Potosi City, and then drove to the Huasteca Region. The drive is about four hours long.

Since everything is quite spread out in the Huasteca, you’ll definitely want a car.

With your rental car, you have total freedom to explore where you want at your own pace.

You can also opt for one of these best Huasteca Potosina tours — but know most of them depart from Ciudad Valles. This is the most central town in La Huasteca.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

6. Valle de Bravo, Estado de Mexico

Lake Avandaro in Valle de Bravo Mexico
Valle de Bravo pueblo magico is a lake town located about 1.5 hours west of Mexico City.

🤔 Why is Valle de Bravo worth visiting?

Known as “the Hamptons of Mexico City,” Valle de Bravo is an affluent town that sits on Lake Avandaro. The lake offers everything from boat tours to water sports.

For the adventurous, book this Valle de Bravo hang gliding experience and jump off one of the town’s mountains or cliffs and soar like a bird over the lake.

Back on land, there’s many things to do in Valle de Bravo like hiking to the Mirador La Pena overlook, and the short hike to the Cascadas Velo de Novia Waterfalls.

Make sure to also stroll the beautiful cobblestone streets around Plaza de la Independencia in downtown, when you can do some shopping at the boutiques.

If you visit during the Mexico butterfly season (approx. mid-November to early-April), there’s a sanctuary not far from Valle de Bravo called Piedra Herrada.

🚗 How to visit Valle de Bravo Mexico

zocalo main square in Valle de Bravo Mexico
Valle de Bravo is one of the closest pueblos magicos to Mexico City.

The easiest way to visit will be coming by rental car or bus from Mexico City. When we visited, we took the bus.

There’s only one bus from Mexico City to Valle de Bravo; Autobuses Zinacantepec (AKA Zina Bus). The drive takes 3-4 hours each way, depending on the bus’s route.

While you can explore many pueblos magicos in 1-2 days, I spent 5 wonderful days here. If you’re also staying a while, these are the best hotels in Valle de Bravo.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

7. Tequila, Jalisco

tequila mexico

🤔 Why is Tequila worth visiting?

Did you know bottles can only be labeled as tequila if the drink comes from here in Tequila, Mexico (and a few surrounding areas)?!

Tequila the town is a fun, colorful pueblo surrounded by beautiful blue agave plant fields. This Blue Weber Agave is the only plant used to make tequila.

The Plaza Principal (Town Square) is the main area of town, if you’re a true tequila fan, you’ll want to visit distilleries outside of town in the non-touristy areas.

I did this Fortaleza Tequila Tour at one of the best artisan distilleries in Tequila. Their tequila is AMAZING, and I took home a bottle of Fortaleza Añejo.

🚗 How to visit Tequila Mexico

jose cuervo tequila train mexico
The Jose Cuervo Tequila Train Tour is one of the best day trips from Guadalajara Mexico.

There are numerous tours to Tequila, Mexico, like this tour from Guadalajara to Tequila.

For a unique experience, opt for this incredibly popular Jose Cuervo Tequila Train Tour and you can ride the train to Tequila past the agave fields (see image above).

Since it’s Tequila after all, many visitors will want that designated driver so you can sample some of the locally-made tequilas.

You can also go on your own by renting a car in Guadalajara, or renting a car in Puerto Vallarta and driving to Tequila.

The drive takes about two hours in normal traffic from Guadaaljara, and four hours from Puerto Vallarta. The roads to Tequila are well-maintained, and considered safe.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

8. Valladolid, Yucatan

colonial church in valladolid mexico

🤔 Why is Valladolid worth visiting?

With so many things to do in Valladolid, it’s no wonder this is becoming a Mexico must see spot.

On your visit, don’t miss the Parque Principal (Main Park) to see the Iglesia de San Servacio Church, as well as colorful, colonial buildings, shops and restaurants.

The picturesque Calzada de los Frailes is one of the nicest streets in town. At the end of the street, you’ll find the 16th Century Ex-Convento de San Bernardino de Siena.

Located only minutes from downtown, you’ll want to visit Cenote Zaci. This partially-open cenote sinkhole is a popular swimming spot with locals and visitors alike.

A bit further out, but still less than an hour away, you’ll be at Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins — one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

🚗 How to visit Valladolid Mexico

cenote ik-kil mexico
There are many great cenotes near Valladolid, like Cenote Ik-Kil.

With its central location in the Yucatan Peninsula, you can easily reach Valladolid from everywhere from Cancun and Tulum, to Playa del Carmen and Merida.

I have visited a few times; twice on a day trip from Merida, and once on a day trip from Tulum. I’ve gone by rental car, on a tour and by bus — and each one works!

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

9. Palenque, Chiapas

palenque mayan ruins mexico

🤔 Why is Palenque worth visiting?

The small town of Palenque (pronounced pull-lan-kay) is located in the Selva Lacandona (Lacandon Jungle). This giant rainforest stretches into Honduras!

Among the best things to do in Palenque, the Palenque Mayan Ruins is an ancient pre-hispanic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here, don’t miss the Temple of the Inscriptions, the largest Mesoamerican stepped pyramid on Earth, with eight levels.

It’s named after the hieroglyphic Inscription Tablets found inside, which shed light on some mysteries of the Maya civilization.

🚗 How to visit Palenque Mexico

palenque mayan ruins | best pyramids in mexico

There is a small airport here called Palenque International Airport, though you’d have to connect through Mexico City. It is the only place with direct flights to Palenque.

For most visitors, you’ll come from San Cristobal de las Casas by rental car or on a tour. I went with a tour, and can’t recommend that enough.

The drive from San Cristobal de las Casas to Palenque takes about four hours each way, so it’s a long day if you’re driving yourself — which is why I recommend you book this Palenque tour.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

10. Tulum, Quintana Roo

woman at the van a la luz tulum sculpture of a wooden man

🤔 Why is Tulum worth visiting?

Tulum pueblo magico is one of the most popular travel destinations in Mexico, and among the best beaches in Mexico.

In fact, most travelers don’t even realize Tulum is a Yucatan pueblo magico because it’s so popular without the designation.

If this will be your first visit, you’re in for a real treat because there are just so many cool things to do in Tulum!

There’s amazing snorkeling in Tulum, lazing at the beautiful beach clubs on the Caribbean Sea, swimming in the gorgeous Tulum cenotes, and so much more.

However, an absolute must do activity when you’re in town is to visit the Tulum Mayan Ruins.

They are located right on the beach, just 10 minutes from Tulum Town (Downtown Tulum), and considered among the best Mayan Ruins in Mexico.

🚗 How to visit Tulum Mexico

tulum ruins in mexico, mayan ruins on the caribbean sea
The Tulum Ruins are one of the most iconic spots in this safe Mexico beach town.

There is now an airport in Tulum Mexico, so you can fly there.

The Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto (AKA Tulum Airport) opened to international flights in 2024 — making Tulum travel much easier.

Another option is to fly to the Cancun Airport, which has a lot more direct flights, and then take ground transportation to Tulum.

BONUS: 5 Honorable Mentions

As I visit more and more pueblos magicos each year, I find the need to keep expanding this list.

The Top 10 I wrote about above are the must-visit magic towns in Mexico, but if you want to keep exploring, the five listed below make great options as well.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

1. Izamal, Yucatan

colonial town with yellow walls and man on his bike in the street - day trips from Merida
It will make you happy just to be surrounded by the bright yellow color.

Izamal is known as the Yellow Town in Mexico, because it’s well… Yellow 💛 As in, the entire downtown Izamal area is painted yellow. (The rest of the town isn’t yellow.)

Why? — You might be wondering. While no one knows for sure, there are a few theories floating around that tackle the Why is Izamal yellow? question.

The first time I visited, I wasn’t sure what to expect and I actually had low expectations. This was back in 2019, and I hadn’t heard much about Izamal.

When I arrived I was in awe. There’s a lot of history in this bustling small town, as well as the Kinich Kakmó Mayan Ruins, and of course, the yellow buildings.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

2. Cholula, Puebla

cholula temple ruins in puebla
The Great Pyramid of Cholula is located below the famous yellow Cholula church.

Located only about 30 minutes from Puebla City, the capital of Puebla state, visitors won’t want to miss Cholula.

It is one of the oldest cities in Mexico, and one of the most colorful — and home to the largest pyramid on Earth by volume!

The Great Pyramid of Cholula measures an astounding 984-feet by 1,033-feet at its base (300 by 315 meters) — which is wider than the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

Another interesting Mexico fun fact about the Cholula Pyramid is that most of it is still buried underground.

Today, visitors can explore the above-ground parts that have been excavated, as well as some of the tunnels under it.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

3. Tepoztlán, Morelos

people on a pyramid at the top of a mountain in one of the best mexico pueblos magicos | tepoztlan tepozteco pyramid

One of the closest pueblos magicos to Mexico City, Tepoztlan has a unique mix of culture, history, ancient ruins and a party atmosphere.

When you visit, make sure you climb to the top of the Tepozteco Pyramid. While the climb up isn’t easy, the views from the top are worth it.

Located atop a cliff overlooking several towns below, the Tepozteco Ruins are dedicated to Tepoztécatl, the Aztec god of harvest, fertility, and pulque.

After a strenuous climb, there are several spas in Tepoztlan to relax in. In fact, many visit specifically for some R&R in these best Tepoztlan hotels and resorts.

Known as one of the most spiritual cities in Mexico, you can also enjoy a temazcal ceremony (pre-Hispanic sweat lodge) for a purification ritual.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

4. Bernal, Queretaro

monolithic rock in a colonial town in mexico | peña de bernal

Bernal is a charming town located about 1.5 hours from Queretaro City, the capital of Queretaro state. In my opinion, it was one of the most beautiful towns in Mexico.

Bernal’s claim to fame is the Peña de Bernal. This is the third-largest monolith on Earth. (🪨 In case you don’t know, a monolith is a single, upright block of stone.)

Besides the Peña de Bernal, which you can climb and hike up, there’s plenty to do back in town.

When you visit, don’t miss the Museo de la Máscara (Bernal Mask Museum) and Temple of Saint Sebastian the Martyr.

Also, make sure to eat some gorditas. Among the traditional Mexican foods, Queretaro gorditas are a local specialty, and known to be the best in the country.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico

5. Mazunte, Oaxaca

punta cometa mazunte mexico
For a detailed guide on transport, check out How to Get to Mazunte Oaxaca Mexico.

If you wish you could have visited Tulum before it became super popular (and crowded), Mazune is a great option.

Located on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, it’s about three hours by car from Oaxaca City. With some of the most beautiful beaches in Oaxaca, you won’t regret the trek!

As a beach town, you’ll want to hit the beach by day. About an hour before sunset, hike up to Punta Cometa to see the sunset from a cliff.

If you want to check out more beaches, Mazunte is located near several other great Oaxaca beach towns like San Agustinillo, Zipolite, Chacahua and Huatulco.

Pueblos Magicos in Mexico: The Full List by State

woman walking down Slap Street Sayulita Mexico
The Sayulita pueblo magico, located in Nayarit, Mexico, is another one of my personal favorites.

Looking for the complete list of pueblos magicos in Mexico?

I have it here below for you, and next to each one, you’ll see the year that town officially became known as a magical town.

For fun, I put a checkmark ✔️ next to the ones I’ve visited, and I’ll keep adding the checkmarks as I visit more Mexico pueblos magicos. I hope to visit them all one day!
