With the way Mexico is portrayed in the mainstream media, you might be thinking the worst.
However, MILLIONS of people visit Cancun each year, and it’s generally regarded as one of the best Mexico beach towns — So what’s the truth about Cancun travel safety?

On the U.S. State Department site, you’ll see each of the 32 Mexico states ranked in one of these four categories:

- ⚠️ Level 3: Reconsider Travel

- ✅ Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions When Traveling
Wondering what state is Cancun located in? Cancun is in Quintana Roo State. This state is generally at Level 2, meaning “Exercise Increased Caution.”
For perspective, some other Level 2 travel destinations include the UK, Belgium, Italy and Belize.
Now ask yourself: Would I be scared to travel to Italy? How about Belgium? Or the UK?
Of course you wouldn’t, and you might have even laughed at those questions.
So what’s the verdict on Cancun Mexico travel safety? In genreal, Cancun is a popular region in Mexico for Americans as it’s a clean and safe city in the Yucatan.
As with any major tourist town, you will need to exercise some level of caution in Cancun, Mexico — but nothing major.
If you remain aware of yourself, your surroundings and your belongings, you can easily have a safe Cancun trip like the many other visitors just like you.

You may have noticed Cancun Mexico doesn’t rank as 100% safe — and that’s because it’s not.
Actually, no place on Earth is 100% safe; not Iceland nor New Zealand (two of the world’s safest countries according to the Global Peace Index), not your hometown, and not even your own home.
Millions of Americans go to Mexico on vacation every year, so if we play the numbers game, the number of incidents is very small. When I’m asked if Mexico is a safe place to go travel on vacation, my response is yes.

As one of the top Mexico destinations, Cancun is both safe and also plagued by the same types of petty crimes common in any major tourism destination like London, Paris or Rome.
These mostly include pickpocketing, cell phone theft and purse snatching — which of course, are all rare.
Not that being the victim of any crime isn’t terrible, but the point here is that the risk of violent crime in Cancun is pretty low.
While it’s safe overall, that’s not to say bad things don’t happen in Cancun; they do.
However, if you remain aware of yourself and surroundings, Cancun should be safe for you just as it is for millions of visitors each year.
Is Cancun safe for travelers right now?
As a general rule, Mexico tourist cities are safe to visit — so for the most part, yes, Cancun is considered safe for travelers at this time.
As tourism is the #1 driving force in Mexico’s economy, the top Mexico travel destinations are generally safe for visitors.
The Mexican government is invested in keeping them this way, so visitors return year after year to all these destinations, including Cancun.

Statistically speaking, travelers are safe in Cancun, and most of Mexico, despite media sensationalism.
Of course, you need to avoid dangerous areas in Cancun and stick to the safe areas in order to remain safe (more info on safe Cancun neighborhoods to come).

For the most part, yes, Cancun is considered safe for solo travelers — and if you want to do a deep dive into this topic, check out my Cancun Solo Travel Guide.
As a solo female traveler, I got a lot of pushback from friends and family when I came to Mexico alone in 2018.
Fast forward a few years, and I found Mexico so safe and amazing that I moved to Mexico permanently (but that’s another story for another article).

Statistically speaking, solo travelers are safe in Cancun, and most of Mexico, despite media sensationalism.
Though EVERYONE and their mother will warn you about solo travel in Mexico, make sure to consider the source.
Are these other solo female travelers who understand what you’re about to do? Have these people even been to Mexico?
Most likely, they haven’t — but if they have, Was this trip in the 1990s? Did they go to Cancun and never leave their resort?
Personally, I’ve found most people who make blanket statements like “Mexico is dangerous” have never even been to Mexico 🤷♀️ Go figure!
In the end, my answer to Is Cancun good for solo travel? — is absolutely. (I will add that you must make your own safety a priority though.)
It’s also safe for the vast majority of visitors so long as you follow the Cancun safety for tourists tips in this article.

For the most part, yes, Cancun is safe for family travel — including families with young children.
With so many of these unique things to do in Cancun, it attracts EVERYONE.
This includes multi-generational families and couples on their honeymoon, to singles ready to mingle, divers, bachelorette parties, fishermen, and golfers.
The most popular tourist destination on Mexico’s East Coast, Cancun sees countless families each year.
The vast majority of them simply have a nice time, and don’t encounter a single problem.
Of course, there’s always the option to stay at one of these best all-inclusive resorts in Cancun for families.

For the most part, yes, Cancun is pretty safe at night for the majority of travelers.
Of course, safety levels go down significantly when there’s alcohol involved — so be mindful of overconsumption, and never accept drinks from a stranger.
Other than that, walk only in well-lit areas, avoid people and situations that feel “off” to you (your intuition is always right), and take an Uber or taxi back to your hotel instead of walking.
With these safety measures, you should be fine outside of daylight hours.

Yes — As long as you keep safety a priority, Cancun during Spring Break, it is perfectly safe for the majority of tourists.
Of course, safety goes WAY DOWN when you’re blackout drunk in a foreign country where you don’t speak the language, so again, you must make safety your priority.
As there’s no definitive yes/no answer to questions like Is travel to Cancun safe? — I always say that traveling to Cancun safety is largely up to each tourist in Cancun.

With countless days of sunshine each year, gorgeous beaches, snorkeling and driving, real Mexican tacos, sun and fun — Cancun is attractive for Mexico expats, and safe.
The same as for tourists, Cancun is generally considered safe for expats in Mexico — but you can join the Cancun Expats Facebook Group to get current info from people who live there.
However, they’re likely to say it’s a safe destination because they probably wouldn’t have moved to Cancun if it wasn’t 😜
What you’ll usually find in the group is European, Canadian and American tourists who visited Cancun, and loved it so much that they moved there.
Unsurprisingly, many say Cancun Quintana Roo Mexico is one of the safest places in Mexico for travelers.

Zona Hotelera (Cancun Hotel Zone)
Wondering where to stay in Cancun Mexico?
Cancun Beach is the part of Cancun you’ve seen on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
It is where the majority of visitors stay and home to the best Cancun resorts and boutique hotels.
This is also where you’ll find lively bars and clubs, chic restaurants, spas and holistic healing centers, and of course, the Cancun beaches, are located.
🗺️ How far is Cancun Airport from Cancun Beach?
The distance from Cancun International Airport to the Cancun Hotel Zone is about 14 miles (23 km).
The safest way to get from Cancun Airport to the beach is booking this private shuttle.
The driver will meet you curbside and drive you straight to your hotel, and the drive from Cancun Airport takes about 30 minutes in normal traffic.

Cancun Centro (Downtown Cancun)
The Cancun Hotel Zone on the beach and Cancun Centro (downtown) are the two main tourist zones where visitors should feel safe in Cancun alone or with friends.
For those with a smaller budget for their vacation in Cancun, stay in Downtown Cancun.
It’s has the best cheap hotels in Cancun, and best hostels in Cancun.
Besides the hotels, everything costs a bit less in downtown compared to the beach, including restaurants, bars and shops.
Crime in Cancun Mexico
Cancun is Mexico’s biggest tourist destination, and getting more and more popular each year.
Sadly, with tourism, comes increased levels of tourist-related crimes — namely petty crime like call phone theft.
As tourism is such a huge part of the Mexican economy, the federal and local government in Cancun is always on the offensive.
During peak travel times like the Cancun busy season in winter and Spring Break, local authorities usually initiate an increased police presence, especially on the beautiful beaches and in public places.
As safety is such a big topic, let’s continue to explore Cancun crime so you know the safety measures to take in order to best avoid it.
As with most tourist towns in the world, petty theft isn’t uncommon in Cancun.
This isn’t a huge problem, and if you don’t leave your valuables unattended and stay aware of your surroundings, you likely won’t be a victim of petty crimes in Cancun.
Is Cancun Safe to travel to?
Shootings in Cancun Mexico
In recent years, there have been a few reports of shootings in Cancun Mexico. As with most violence in Mexico, it mostly has direct ties to the cartels.
However, these types of things will jar anyone’s sense of safety, especially innocent bystanders.
In mid-2023, there was a gang-related shooting on Cancun Beach between rival gang members. Sadly, four people lost their lives.
As a response, the local government in Cancun has increased police presence on beaches in 2024 to ensure Cancun is a safe place for locals and visitors.
While I can’t say this won’t happen again, I can say it’s a rare occurrence — and largely related to the cartels, which you should avoid to have a safe trip to Cancun.
So what’s the verdict: Is Cancun safe from cartels? For tourists, yes, you should be able to travel to Cancun safe.
Is Cancun Safe to travel to?
Drugs & Cartels in Cancun
The Mexican drug cartels cast such a dark shadow on an otherwise amazing country full of beautiful places.
As I live in Mexico, I know first-hand what a meta topic this is, and will try to navigate it carefully.
If you’ve been wondering, Why is Cancun so dangerous? — there’s a clear link to most crime in Cancun.
As with much of Mexico, the drug cartels are a problem in the areas around Cancun.
One of the main reasons for this? Tourists who go to Cancun and buy drugs — as Cancun is a top party destination.
If you want to do your part to keep crime down in Cancun, don’t buy drugs from the Cancun cartels.
Most crime and violence in Cancun, Quintana Roo State, and ALL Mexico, has a direct connection to the Mexico cartels and criminal organizations.
As tourists are the drug cartels’ best customers, they largely keep their violence away from the Cancun tourist areas — so tourists keep coming traveling to Cancun, and keep buying drugs off them.

At the end of the day, this is the best advice I can offer for Cancun safety: Not buying drugs in Cancun is the best way to avoid the cartels, and not support them.
Avoid anything related to the cartels, don’t buy drugs off them, and stay as far away from them as physically possible — and you’re well on your way to safe travels in Cancun Mexico.

Is Cabo San Lucas safer than Cancun?
They usually rank about the same in terms of warnings from the U.S. State Department, with them both at Level 2 out of 4.
A Level 2 warning signifies a higher risk of petty crime; unsurprising in any town with a lot of tourists.
While big cities like Cancun, Cabo and Mexico City have the worst reputation for criminal activity and crime, the reality is there’s crime in all Mexico tourist towns — as well as ALL of the world’s biggest tourist destinations.

Is Playa del Carmen safer than Cancun?
They usually rank about the same in terms of warnings from the U.S. State Department, with them both at Level 2 out of 4.
While many want to compare nearby Playa del Carmen to Cancun, or wonder, Is Cancun safer than Cabo San Lucas? — there’s no definitive answer to these types of questions.
As some of the top Mexico resort towns, they all have good and bad points. They’re each safe for most visitors, though sadly, they’re not safe for all visitors.

Cancun Safety vs. U.S. Safety in Major Cities
Before we close out this section on Cancun travel safety, I wanted to offer you some perspective on U.S. vs Mexico crime statistics.
While I’m not knocking the U.S., I am saying that if you live in the U.S. (or some parts of Canada), you likely live with the same levels of crime as Cancun has — and you also likely aren’t scared of your hometown.
Like any country, Mexico has both safe places and unsafe places travelers should avoid.
When looking at the world’s most violent cities, there are several in Mexico, as many might have expected. ⚠️ Note: Cancun isn’t on that list.
What you might not have expected is that there are two cities in the U.S. that also make the list — St. Louis, Missouri, and Baltimore, Maryland.
Despite being the least-safe cities in America, BOTH of those places continue to welcome travelers, and even host large-scale events with hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Common Tourist Scams in Cancun Mexico
There aren’t a ton of things you need to be aware of while traveling to Cancun Mexico, but there are some common tourist scams in Cancun to be aware of.
These things aren’t exactly the norm, but you’ll want to know about them for the sake of staying safe in Cancun.
1. Cancun ATM Scams
A lot of places in Cancun are cash only, so you’ll need to use ATMs in Cancun, which are actually the best way to get pesos in Mexico.
They’re located all over town, but the safest ATMs in Cancun are inside of banks, and not just on the street.
If there’s a problem, you’re already at the bank, so staff can assist you — which isn’t the case at street ATMs.
For an added safety, I recommend the ATMs on Cancun Beach, rather than the ones in Downtown Cancun.
When possible, avoid the ATMs inside convenience stores as well.
If you need cash in a pinch, you can use any ATM you’d like, just exercise increased caution when doing so.

2. Police Corruption in Cancun
In Facebook groups for expats and digital nomads in Cancun, like Cancun Expats & Friends, you can read past posts about corruption by police officers in Cancun.
It’s not that all cops in Cancun and Mexico are corrupt, but the bad ones certainly ruin it for the good ones.
For the most part, police will only approach you if you’re breaking any laws, or being a public nuisance.
One of the best ways to attract police attention is by being drunk and acting rowdy in public, so you don’t want to do that.
If you’re renting a car in Cancun, be sure to obey all Mexico driving laws.

3. Cancun Car Rental Scams
If you’re getting a Cancun car rental, make sure to take photos of the entire car, including the interior.
While someone from the company will also likely do this, I prefer having my own as well. In case there are any disputes when you return it, this proof comes in handy.

4. Robberies in Cancun
While not incredibly common, robberies and theft in Cancun can happen.
When packing for Mexico, you’ll want to leave all valuables at home or in the hotel room safe.
As another piece of travel advice, only carry a small amount of cash on you.
For most travelers, $1,000 pesos (about $50-55 USD) should be enough for the day.

Is it safe to rent a car in Cancun?
For the majority of travelers, yes, it’s perfectly safe to rent a car in Cancun and drive in Mexico.
This part of Mexico is a hotspot for Mexico road trips all up and down the peninsula, and renting a car is common for visitors because public transportation isn’t the best.
The one thing most people will tell you about driving in Mexico — is that you’ll want to avoid driving at night.
This is especially true on the Yucatan Peninsula roads just outside of Cancun in the more rural areas that aren’t well lit, making it hard to see large potholes.

Is Cancun Safe to travel to?
Is it safe to drive in Cancun?
For the majority of travelers, yes, it’s safe to drive in Cancun and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
The roads in this part of Mexico are generally well-maintained and considered safe for drivers.
As mentioned, there are better ways to get around in Cancun, so I don’t recommend renting a car just to drive around town.
However, if you’re planning for a few day trips from Cancun to places like Chichen Itza Ruins, Tulum, Valladolid and/or the cenotes near Cancun, then a rental car is the way to go.
How to Get Around in Cancun
Cancun is easy to navigate, and everything is located within a short walk or drive.
In fact, I don’t recommend renting a car if you’re just staying in town because it’s usually easier to get around without one.
If you prefer to walk, choose a hotel in the Zona Hotelera (Cancun Hotel Zone), areas of Downtown Cancún near Avenida Kukulcán.
These are the most walkable parts of Cancun so if you’re wondering Is it safe to walk around Cancun? — it is in these parts, though you’ll want to exercise caution at night.
Is Cancun Safe to travel to?
Is there Uber in Cancun?
Yes — There is Cancun Uber service, but you can’t use it in all places, including the Cancun International Airport.
That’s right: While Uber is legal in Cancun, there’s no Uber at Cancun Airport. In fact, it’s actually illegal for drivers to pick you up at the Cancun Airport.
Instead, you’ll have to use the official Cancun Airport taxis, or book this private Cancun Airport Shuttle.
With all the airport taxi surcharges, the prices are comparable — but the shuttle is MUCH more conformable.
Is there Lyft in Cancun?
No — There’s no Lyft in Mexico. Besides Uber, you can use DiDi for ride-shares in Cancun.
Is Cancun Safe to travel to?
Are taxis safe in Cancun?
Yes — The vast majority of visitors and locals who use taxis are completely safe.
Keep in mind you will need cash to pay (pesos are best; but some will accept USD).
As taxi drivers hate making change, and sometimes just won’t even do it, always keep small bills and coins.
Also, remember to tip at the standard Mexico tipping rate of 15-20%.
This is what you’ll follow when tipping in Cancun, no matter if it’s a restaurant, bar, tour or taxi.
What should I actually be careful of in Cancun?
While you must stay aware of your surroundings, your belongings, yourself and whomever else you’re traveling with in Cancun, the chances of you being the victim of a crime are low.
However, there are things you might not be thinking about that can impact your overall Cancun vacation.
When it comes to Cancun tourist safety in Mexico, here are the 4 things you need to be aware of:
1. Drinking Water Safety in Cancun
Can you drink the water in Cancun Mexico?
No — It is not safe to drink the water!
In fact, if there’s one Mexico travel tip you must remember, it’s don’t drink the water in Mexico or you can get sick.
Tap water in Mexico isn’t considered safe for human consumption — not for locals, and not for visitors.
All this to say please don’t drink tap water in Cancun, or any other city in Mexico for that matter.

Planning on swimming in Cancun on your vacation? As the beaches are a huge part of why people visit Cancun, I know most travelers are.
While most travelers are more concerned with not getting their phone taken (understandable, btw) they forget other things that can cause serious harm — like the ocean.
Now, the Caribbean Sea at the Cancun beaches isn’t known for huge waves. However, undertows and rip currents can happen, as well as issues with sargassum seaweed.

Before I go too far and make Cancun sound like some kind of travel utopia, I’ll stop here and say there are definitely some things to remain aware of.

1. Get Travel Insurance for Mexico
If the you-know-what in 2020 taught us anything, it’s that life and travel plans can change in an instant.
For all the unexpected things that come up in travel, you should buy travel insurance.

Besides the SIM card, make sure your phone is charged and that you carry a portable charger if you’ll be out all day.
When traveling to Cancun, you’ll use your phone for SO MUCH — ie. calling an Uber, the translator app, accessing your bank, and of course, emergencies.

4. Leave your valuables at home
Want to make sure your valuables are still with you after you’re done traveling?
The best way to do this is to leave them at home, so they’ll be right there waiting for you when you get back.
While Cancun is a great place for a beach vacation, Sun + Fun + Margaritas = Lost things and sad travelers.
Also, expensive laptops, DSLR cameras, and designer clothes and sunglasses often draw the wrong type of attention.

5. Listen to your intuition
If your inner voice (AKA intuition) is telling you NO about a person or a place — please listen!
If someone is giving you the creeps, get away from them ASAP. Personally, I don’t even worry about making a polite exit, I just get from them as fast as possible.

6. Be careful after dark
Although I’m not saying you must return to your Cancun hotel before dark, be sure you have a plan of how you’ll get back to your hotel at night.
With both Uber in Cancun and taxis in Cancun, this isn’t hard.

The reality is there is crime in Cancun, and there’s also cartel presence, but most visitors travel to Cancun and have a great trip.
The minority of visitors have a negative experience in Cancun, but those are the voices you hear over the people who loved Cancun.
Personally, as someone who’s been to Cancun, I think it’s as safe as much of Mexico, but with Cancun’s popularity has come a rise in crime and violence.
As mentioned, these are mostly isolated incidents in one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
Now, if you’re a victim of said isolated incidents, that term has a different meaning to someone like me, who visited Cancun without incident and just got to enjoy this Mexico resort town.
