It’s the best airline to Mexico because you can fly into the country, and then travel around it.
However, be prepared for higher prices compared to Mexico’s budget airlines.
Though Aeroméxico’s tickets can be pricey, many find the extra cost worth it for the service and comfort provided.
The flights and airplanes are usually well-maintained, and you’ll likely have a pleasant experience once on board.

Often compared to Southwest Airlines in the U.S., Volaris takes a budget-friendly approach while striving to offer good customer service.
They are my personal favorite Mexican airline, and I usually fly with them.

If you’re looking to travel within Mexico or select destinations in the United States without breaking the bank, Volaris might be a great option.
While I have flown them MANY times before and had great experiences overall, flying with Volaris can be a mixed experience based on customer reviews.
On the plus side, Volaris offers numerous routes across Mexico and the United States, making it convenient for domestic and international travelers.
The fares are typically low, which is perfect for budget-conscious travelers who don’t need many bells and whistles when they travel.
The airline aims to keep costs down by offering basic services, with options to pay for additional amenities if needed. It’s an “only pay for what you need” model.

For nearly a century, it was the nation’s largest and most prominent carrier until they ceased operations in August 2010.
In a remarkable turn, Mexicana started operating again in December 2023 under the auspices of the Mexican government, and it’s now a state-owned airline.

Mexicana Airlines offers about 20 routes connecting various cities across Mexico like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, San Jose del Cabo, and Tulum.
Their main hub is out of Felipe Ángeles International Airport (aka AIFA Mexico City Airport), which is located about an hour north of Mexico City in Zumpango, State of Mexico.
The airline now flies new Embraer E190-E2 and E195-E2 jets.

I promised to tell you about what’s considered the worst Mexican airline, and that would be Viva (formerly known as VivaAerobus Airlines).
One of the leading low-cost Mexican airlines that has made air travel affordable for many travelers, Viva can get you to a lot of places in Mexico for cheap.
If you’re looking for budget-friendly flights within Mexico, Viva is the one — but I’ll warn you that they’re basically the Spirit Airlines of Mexico.
Viva and Volaris have agreed to merge, pending government approval, but both plan to keep flying under their own names.
⚠️ What you need to know before flying Viva
Flying with Viva can be a hit or miss, so be prepared for various experiences, both good and bad, as their service quality varies significantly from flight to flight.
On one hand, the fares are incredibly low, which is perfect for travelers on a tight budget.
They offer numerous routes across Mexico, making getting to popular and less touristy destinations convenient. However, the low cost comes with some trade-offs.
Many passengers have reported flight cancellations and change issues, often with little to no notice. I’d say 80% of the flights I’ve taken with them have been delayed.
While the base fare is low, Viva is known for charging extra fees for almost everything.
Additionally, the check-in process at the airport can be chaotic and time-consuming, with long lines and sometimes unhelpful staff.

Once you’re on the flight, the experience is generally no-frills, but manageable. I’ve taken them several times, and the actual flights have been fine.
Despite all their issues, Viva is one of the best cheap Mexican airlines — as long as you remember the saying “you get what you pay for.”
They offer a cost-effective way to travel around Mexico if you’re flexible and prepared for potential inconveniences.

🧳 One Final Tip: I’d skip Viva if you have check-in luggage, especially in the Mexico City Airport. The process is a nightmare, and not worth the headache.
Small Regional Mexican Airlines Worth Knowing About
Venturing off the beaten path in Mexico? These smaller airlines fly to places the big airlines skip.
I have personally flown with TAR Aerolíneas and AeroTucán, and had a good experience with both.
5. TAR Aerolíneas
TAR Aerolíneas is a regional airline based in Santiago de Querétaro (AKA Querétaro City). It focuses on connecting smaller cities within Mexico.
If you must reach destinations like Aguascalientes, Durango, or Chihuahua, TAR offers direct and affordable flights, making it a practical choice for regional travel.
🏆 My Experience with TAR Aerolíneas
I have only been on this airline once when traveling from Mexico City to Bahías de Huatulco in Oaxaca state.
Overall, I had a good experience with TAR Mexico, and would fly with them again.
Besides me, other travelers also appreciate TAR Aerolíneas for its straightforward and efficient service.
While the airline provides essential connectivity, it operates with a no-frills approach.
This means limited in-flight services, with basic refreshments and no entertainment options available.
