I did this hike, and it was difficult in some parts, but doable for people of a decent fitness level.
This moderately-steep trail winds its way through lush forests, rewarding hikers with awe-inspiring panoramic views of Lake Avandaro (or, Lago de Avandaro in Spanish) one you reach the top.
The highlight of the hike is reaching the towering cross at the summit.
This iconic landmark provides an unbeatable vantage point to soak in the stunning natural beauty of the region.
Whether you’re an avid hiker or a novice, this hike promises a memorable experience.

Once you arrive at the entrance gate, there are people at the entrance collecting donations.
These are local people and volunteers who help maintain the trail, so consider donating about $50-100 pesos per person ($3-6 USD).

7. Visit Velo de Novia Waterfall: The Best Valle de Bravo Waterfall
Avándaro is a charming suburb of Valle de Bravo, and when you visit, don’t miss the 115-foot-tall (47 m) Velo de Novia Waterfall — which translates to “bridal veil falls” or “wedding veil falls.”
Nestled within a fir tree grove in a nature reserve, this stunning waterfall is accessible via an enjoyable trail.
The trail takes you through lush greenery and offers glimpses of local wildlife.
A well-maintained and flat trail, I saw people of all ages on it when I visited Cascada Velo de Novia Waterfall.
As you approach the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grows louder, heightening the anticipation.
When you finally arrive, the sight of the cascading water surrounded by pristine nature is simply breathtaking.
This is a great place to take photos, and you can also get up close to the falls if you don’t mind walking across some of the rocks in the water.
If you do, be careful because they’re usually slippery.
If you’re getting there by taxi, the driver will know where you drop you off to easily get to the falls.
For those coming by rental car, you’ll want to park here to access Velo de Novia Falls.

El Callejón del Hambre, meaning “Hunger Alley,” is a local’s favorite for street food in Downtown Valle de Bravo.
Here, you can treat your taste buds to an array of mouthwatering taco creations, from succulent carne asada to flavorful tacos al pastor.
My favorite place for street tacos in Valle de Bravo was Tacos Jaimes in Callejón del Hambre.
Besides tacos, don’t miss the regional favorites, like elote (corn on the cob with mayo, chili and cheese), and local delicacies, like esquites de camaron.
Esquites (corn in a cup with mayo, chili and cheese) can be found all over Mexico, but you won’t find these esquites de camaron (shrimp esquites) outside of Valle de Bravo.

For adrenaline junkies, Valle de Bravo offers exhilarating mountain biking trails that weave through rugged terrain and lush forests.

15. See the Folk Art at Museo de Arte Popular: The Best Museum in Valle de Bravo
The Museo de Arte Popular Valle de Bravo (MUAPO), or Valle de Bravo Art Museum, houses an impressive collection of Mexican folk art.
Inside, you’ll see art pieces from many states in Mexico, including the ceramic pineapples from Michoacán state, Huichol bead art from Jalisco and Nayarit states (called chakira), alebrijes from Oaxaca state, and more.
I have been to a few folk art museums in Mexico, including the famous Museo de Arte Popular Folk Art Museum, which is one of the best Mexico City museums — and I was really impressed by the Museo de Arte Popular Valle de Bravo.
Located in a converted home, this museum showcases the private collection of the Mama Viña y Oscar Foundation.
While not a huge museum, if you love colorful Mexican folk art and museums, it’s among the must see Valle de Bravo attractions.
To tour it, you must go with a guide, which you will get at the entrance. The tours are free, but donations are accepted.
My husband and I tipped our guide $200 MXN pesos (about $12 USD) for the 45-minute tour, as $100 pesos per person is a good tip.
🗿 Love museums? There’s also the Museo Arqueológico de Valle de Bravo, a small archeological museum located near the lake that houses pre-Columbian artifacts.

16. Stroll Calle Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza
Calle Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza Street is home to upscale shops that offer artisan-made Mexican housewares and indigenous Mazahua crafts.
These crafts reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region and are known for their vibrant colors and intricate designs.
From handwoven textiles to intricately carved wooden items, you’ll find a wide range of unique and authentic souvenirs.
My favorite shop on this street was Sabiduría Chamánica, but you’ll want to explore them all because each is unique and gives you the opportunity to connect with the cultural essence of Valle de Bravo.

17. Visit Joaquin Arcadio Pagaza Museum
Besides just shopping on Calle Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza, you can also check out the Museo Joaquin Arcadio Pagaza Museum Valle de Bravo (sometimes listed as Museo Joaquin Arcadio Curroc Valle de Bravo Museum).
Born in Valle de Bravo, Joaquín Pagaza went on to become a poet and Bishop of Veracruz Mexico.
The house where he grew up has since been turned into a museum that has permanent and temporary art exhibitions, a library and cultural space.
Inside, you’ll see paintings and sculptures from local Mexican artists and international artists on displays.
There are also film screenings and live performances like concerts, plays, theater events, held throughout the year.

To reach this natural wonder, take a picturesque 20-30 minute walk through the woods.
Along the way, you’ll hear the soothing sounds of cascading water, signaling your approach.
As you stand before the waterfall, take a moment to immerse yourself in the serenity of the surroundings.
The crystal-clear waters and lush greenery create a peaceful oasis where you can reconnect with nature.
For a nice respite after your hike, head to Hotel Misión Grand Valle de Bravo for a meal.
This famous hotel in Valle de Bravo has some tables right next to the falls, for a dining experience like no other.

Step back in time at the Templo Santa Maria Ahuacatlan, the oldest church in Valle de Bravo.
This historical treasure has withstood the test of time and showcases Valle de Bravo’s deep-rooted spirituality.
Inside the church, you’ll find the El Cristo Negro statue (Black Christ).
Miraculously, the original structure of this church burned to the ground in the Colonial era, but this statue survived virtually unscathed.

Look no further than Rüf (pronounced “roof”), the rooftop bar at Cinco Rodavento Hotel — which is also one of the best hotels in Valle de Bravo.
This restaurant/bar offers a sophisticated culinary experience, with a delightful selection of cocktails and cuisine.
However, the star of the show here is the mezcal cocktails, expertly crafted to tantalize your senses.
As you sip on your drink, relish panoramic views of Lake Avandaro and the surrounding mountains.
It’s a perfect setting for a romantic evening, a special celebration, or just a nice place to watch the sunset in Valle de Bravo.

Avandaro is a charming hillside town that overlooks Valle de Bravo and Lake Avandaro.
This small town offers a unique perspective of the region, and its vibrant weekend energy is infectious.
One of the highlights of Avandaro is the stunning architecture and luxurious villas that adorn the hillsides.
You might even spot some multimillion-dollar homes that belong to Mexico’s elite.
When you visit, make sure to check out Velo de Novia Waterfall (#7 on this list) and El Salto Waterfall (#18 on this list), and then take a leisurely stroll through this picturesque town to take in the beautiful surroundings.
There are also several restaurants and cafes in town — and if you want a great burger, head to Soul Avandaro for the Sauber burger, which comes with a side of fondue cheese 🤤
They also have some great vegan options here too, like the cauliflower wings (vegan buffalo wings).

23. Marvel at the Best Valle de Bravo Art Galleries
Valle de Bravo has a thriving arts scene, and beckons art enthusiasts from all around the world.
The town is home to numerous art galleries that showcase the talents of Mexican and international artists.
Some of my favorites include Estilo Mexicano Valle de Bravo and Galería Venado Azul, which has a lot of smaller items you can buy as souvenirs.
Some galleries even offer the chance to meet the artists and gain insight into their creative processes.
To see the happenings in each individual gallery, you’ll want to follow them on social media.
Even if you aren’t attending any gallery events, most are open for you to simply admire their diverse range of artworks, from traditional Mexican pieces to contemporary art and avant-garde creations.

24. Dine at the Boat Restaurants of Lake Avandaro
There are several large boats that have been turned into restaurants located right on the shores of Lago Avándaro.
While there are a few options to choose from, the highest rated is Restaurante los Pericos, located near the Valle de Bravo Embarcadero (which translates to “pier” or “wharf”).
The food here is simple, with plenty of traditional Mexican foods on offer, as well as cold beers and cocktails.
However, the real reason to eat here are the epic lake views.

25. Snap a Photo at the Valle de Bravo Sign
Located just in front of the Embarcadero in Valle de Bravo, you’ll see the “Yo Amo Valle,” or I love Valle de Bravo sign.
You’ll see similar signs with large letters like this in many Mexican towns and cities, and they always make for a nice photo op.

26. Ride the Chu Chu Trolley
Valle de Bravo is a VERY hilly town, and sometimes you just want to sit down as you tour it! For a driving tour, don’t miss the Valle de Bravo Chu Chu Trolley.
It goes by a few places in town, and a few places just outside of town in Avandaro, like Cascadas de Piedra el Molino Waterfall and Velo de Novia Waterfall.
When it stops, you’ll have about 15 minutes to see the falls and take a few photos.
You can buy your tickets and catch the trolley here, just in front of Plaza Mariposa (Butterfly Plaza) and the Embarcadero.
In total, the tour lasts about 1.5 hours, and tickets usually cost $100 pesos (about $6 USD), but prices can sometimes vary.
There didn’t seem to be a set Valle de Bravo trolley schedule when we visited, but there were definitely more trolleys going on the weekends versus weekdays.

We stumbled upon our guide while hiking to Vela de Novia Waterfalls, and he had his horses there to take us through the forest.
For about $1,000 pesos ($60 USD), we enjoyed a 30-minute ride with the guide through the stunning landscapes of the region, which offered a unique and immersive way to connect with nature.
Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or a first-time rider, there are Valle de Bravo horseback riding options suitable for all skill levels.

Monte Alto State Park (Reserva Estatal Monte Alto) is a protected area near Valle de Bravo, Mexico.
It has more than 12 miles (19 km) of trails for riding ATVs, hiking, mountain biking, running, horseback riding, and more.
One of the best hiking trails in Valle de Bravo, don’t miss the Circuito Monte Alto, a 2.8 mile loop trail (4.5 km), and the Monte Alto Eastern Ascent.
This moderately-difficult 4.2 mile trail (6.75 km) is among the best Mexico birding trails.
