When you arrive at Cenote Ik Kil, the first thing you’ll encounter is the ticketing booth. There are two windows for tour agencies and the other two windows are for the general public.

Cenote Ik Kil accepts credit cards of all types (both Mexican and foreign) so you don’t need to have a ton of cash on you to visit.

It’s still a good idea to have some cash for certain things at Ik Kil, such as renting a towel if you forgot to bring one along.

Cenote Ik Kil Layout and Structure

The cenote has been developed for tourism, with well-maintained facilities including stairways, platforms, and snack bars.

Are there facilities at Cenote Ik Kil?

Yes — The facilities at Ik Kil include changing rooms, bathrooms, lockers, outdoor showers, two restaurants, several snack bars, convenience stores, drink stands and bars, and even a souvenir shop.

🏩Cenote Ik Kil Cabanas

There are also cabanas at Cenote Ik Kil for those who want to stay the night.

Called Hotel Ik-Kil, you’ll also have access to the facility after most guests have gone, as well as amenities like hammocks and sun beds to relax on.

Cenote Ik Kil is definitely a more commercial cenote than some. In fact, some people call it the Disneyland Cenote because it is so developed.

🪜Cenote Ik Kil Staircase to Enter

Guests using the stairs to go down to Cenote Ik Kil.

Once you’ve passed through the changing room and shower area, it’s time to walk down to the cenote.

The staircase consists of 90 steps with chain railings and a few landings from which to take pictures (or leap into the water).

Cenote Ik Kil pier (platform)

At the base of the staircase, you’ll find a raised stone landing or platform where you can rest or jump into the water.

🛑 Note: You can’t store your belongings like backpacks and/or towels on the pier. There’s a guard at the cenote entrance that will make you take your belongings and store them in a locker.

🚿 Cenote Ik Kil Showers, Changing Rooms & Restrooms

bathroom and changing area in cenote ik kil

The first part of the installations at Ik Kil is much like a public swimming pool. Use the restrooms and changing rooms, then rinse off in the showers.

Taking a shower before going down to the cenote is MANDATORY.

You are not allowed to use sunscreen, bug spray, or any other product. It’s so far down that you don’t need sunscreen there anyway.

Rinsing off all of these chemicals helps protect the pure fresh water (and the beauty) of the cenote.

🔐 Cenote Ik Kil Lockers

locker area in cenote ik kil

The lockers at Ik Kil are pretty standard, but useful.

While I’ve always felt safe at Ik Kil Cenote, there’s always a possibility you lose something (or worse, someone might steal something), so make sure you use the lockers.

🛑 Note: You can’t store your belongings like backpacks and/or towels on the pier. There’s a guard at the cenote entrance that will make you take your belongings and store them in a locker.

🦺 Cenote Ik Kil Life Jackets

life jackets in cenote ik kil
Life jackets are included in the entrance fee, and you can pick up yours right next to the changing rooms.

Wearing a life jacket in the cenote is mandatory because Cenote Ik-Kil is so deep at 157-feet (48 m). That’s pretty impressive, is it not?

Due to the extensive Cenote Ik Kil depth, lifejackets are required when swimming, but also when being in the cenote area.

Since there aren’t many places to rest along the sheer walls, wearing a lifejacket is an important safety precaution near the cenote in case you fall in.

Cenote Ik Kil Mexico

Are there restaurants at Cenote Ik Kil?

Yes — There are two different restaurants at Ik Kil, one of them is a buffet restaurant, and the other offers fast-food-style fare.

Cenote Ik Kil history

Multiple articles claim that bones and jewelry were found in Cenote Ik Kil as sacrifices to the Mayan rain god, and that it was reserved for Mayan Royalty.

However, I wasn’t able to find a definitive source for these claims.

What we do know is that all cenotes were (and are) sacred to the ancient Mayans.

They served as portals to the underworld, and were important points of connection between the everyday plane and the world of the gods. Still today, they hold tremendous cultural significance.

If visiting cenote Ik Kil is on your itinerary, then try to avoid it during the weekends.

There have been quite a few mentions throughout this article about this being one of the most Instagram worthy cenotes in Mexico.

On that note, remember the Instagram vs Reality factor when you’re planning to visit.

Those people-less Instagram photos were likely taken on a Tuesday morning at 9am when there was no one else there.

Besides just photos, this is a smaller cenote, and an overall much more pleasant experience without 100 other people in there with you.

Cenote Ik kil Mexico

What are cenotes?

Cenotes are sinkholes created by underground rivers that eat away at the soft limestone rock of the Yucatan Peninsula. Over time, the rivers carve out deep pools underground, which are the cenotes.

cenote ik kil mexico with blue water and vine going into the water
Cenote Ik Kil is one of the open-air cenotes in Mexico. It is also one of the cenotes that are quite close to the Mayan Ruins Chichen Itza.

Sometimes, the roof of the cavern above the pool falls in, opening all or part of it to the sky. That’s why cenotes can also be called sinkholes.

Other times, the cenote stays hidden underground in a cavern only accessible by narrow ladders, rappelling, or cave diving.

There are more than six thousand cenotes in the Yucatán Peninsula, making them a key part of the landscape. They have also been of cultural and religious importance since the days of the Itzá and the Maya.

While everyone in the Yucatan Peninsula raves about cenotes, now many know the answer to the question, What is a cenote? — but now you do!

Cenote Ik Kil Mexico

What are the 4 types of cenotes?

Of the (approx.) 6,000 cenotes in Yucatan, there are four distinct types of cenotes: open, semi-open, cave and diving cenotes.

cenote azul
Cenote Mexique Azul what’s called an open cenote, as there’s no rock that covers the top of it.

Each type is unique and beautiful in its own way, so make sure to visit as many types of Mexican cenotes as you can.

Open Cenotes

You may see these called swimming pool cenotes, as they are completely open and look like a natural swimming pool — like Cenote Azul and Casa Cenote.

Semi-Open Cenotes

These cenotes are semi-encased in their native limestone rock. Semi-open cenotes have large walls surrounding the pool itself, and a large hole in the top of it so some sunlight gets in — like Cenote Ik-Kil and El Gran Cenote.

Closed Cenotes in Caves

Cave cenotes are exactly as the name says. These are located underground in a cave, and you’ll have to access them by going down some stairs — like Cenote Suytun.

Dive Cenotes for Diving

The final type is also located inside a cave, but the water in these cenotes is much deeper so they are sought out for diving — like Cenote El Pit at Cenote Dos Ojos Park.
