Renting a car in San Luis Potosi is pretty straightforward, and the best place to get one is at the SLP Airport.

The drive in your rental car will take 3.5-4.5 hours, depending on traffic.

If you don’t have a Mexico rental car, the other three possible options are to take the bus, look for a BlaBlaCar ride, or try to find a taxi driver willing to take you (though admittedly, it won’t be easy to find someone).

How do I get to Huasteca Potosina from Mexico City?

There are several ways that you can get to Huasteca Potosina from Mexico City — including renting a car and driving yourself, taking the bus, or flying to a nearby airport.

The drive from Mexico City to Huasteca Potosina is generally considered safe, but try not to drive at night.

The drive is 7-9 hours, depending on the route you take, so you might need to break it up over two days.

If you’re looking to rent a car in Mexico, I always recommend Discover Cars. I have used this company several times, and in a few cities throughout Mexico.

Several bus companies operate routes between Mexico City and Huasteca Potosina.

The ride is about 9-10 hours and will cost you about $800 MXN (about $45 USD). 🚌 Pro Tip: The overnight bus is a great option.

The third option is by plane.

There are multiple flights leaving Mexico City to Tampico Airport or San Luis Potosi Airport — the two closest airports to Huasteca Potosina.

Prices vary, but round-trip flights cost about $1,240 MXN pesos ($62 USD).

Once you arrive, you can take a bus to Huasteca Potosina or rent a car and drive. From either, the drive is about three hours from the airport.

During this time, the weather is cooler, the water is clear and exquisitely blue, and the roads are all accessible.

For warmer weather, come to San Luis Potosi La Huasteca Potosina during March and April.

Some people also travel to Huasteca Potosina during the rainy season from about May to September.

Summer is the off-season or slow season, so you’ll get better prices, but also rainy, humid weather.

I visited for one week in early-December, which is technically the dry season, but we had rain nearly every day ☔️

Still, it was an epic trip, and I can’t wait until we’re traveling to Huasteca Potosina again.

From either airport, you can rent a car and drive to Huasteca Potosina.

From SLP Airport, the drive is about 3.5 hours in normal traffic, and from TAM Airport, the drive is about 2.5 hours in normal traffic.

You can also take a bus to Ciudad Valles, the best place to stay in Huasteca Potosina.

For less hassle, and a lower cost (though you spend more time in transit), the Huasteca Potosina bus is a great option.

In fact, there are many spots in Huasteca Potosina where you can swim.

Be aware that you can’t swim right in front of the waterfalls, and swimming may not be allowed during the wet season when water levels are at their highest. 

In general, you should exercise caution because there are no lifeguards anywhere.
