Meet Your Mexico Podcast Host

In early 2018, Shelley sold everything she owned, intending to start an online career so she could have location independence.

The plan was to travel for one year, and try to figure it all out. The trip started in Mexico City in April 2018… and, well, she’s still in Mexico!

With no plans whatsoever to stay in Mexico, she ended up falling in love with Mexico City at first sight — and decided to just keep exploring Mexico for the year.

Now, years later, she lives in Mexico full time in the Yucatan Peninsula in the beautiful colonial city of Merida.

However, before settling down, she traveled solo to 16 states in Mexico, falling deeper in love with Mexico and solo travel, along the way.

There’s no better time to visit Mexico than during Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos).

There are a few large Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico that take place in various parts of the country — but nothing compares to the festivities in Oaxaca City during this Mexican holiday. 

Though this holiday only takes place over November 1st and November 2nd each year, it’s never too early to plan for a Day of the Dead trip — and some even plan nine months in advance.

Do Americans need a visa for Mexico?

No, U.S. passport holders don’t need a visa to travel to anywhere in Mexico.

This no-visa-necessary rule is another reason why Mexico is one of the best travel destinations from the U.S.

When you arrive in Mexico and go through Customs and Immigration, you’ll receive UP TO a 180-day (6 month) FMM tourist visa.

This is a small piece of paper you need to hold on to so you can give it back to Immigration when you leave the country.

🇲🇽 Mexico Travel Tip: Keep track of your FMM by storing it in a secure place like this travel wallet, along with all your other important travel documents.

There is no charge for the FMM, but if you lose yours, there is a charge of about $600 pesos ($30 USD) to replace it.

You’ll also some paperwork to fill out at the airport before you can leave the country.

⚠️ Update: Many airports are no longer using the paper FMM, and instead, using the passport stamp. Both are valid.

Is Mexico safe for travel?

Short answer: Yes, for the vast majority of travelers, Mexico is safe.

Longer answer: Safety is a tricky subject because safety is a feeling, not a fact, and no place on Earth is 100% safe.

As a larger country, Mexico has of good and bad parts. Tourism is the country’s biggest (legal) industry, so the Mexican government takes measures to make sure the country is safe for its visitors.

While traveling to Mexico, and really anywhere else, you’ll want follow the same general travel safety tips you would anywhere else.

You can also register your trip with the STEP Program, a free travel safety initiative for U.S. citizens.

Is Mexico safe for solo female travelers?

The answers to the questions above are tricky, because no place on Earth is 100% safe.

However, statistically-speaking, travelers encounter very few incidents (the majority encounter none) when traveling to Mexico.
