Yes — There actually is a small Cozumel airport called Cozumel International Airport (code: CZM).
You can find direct and cheap flights to Cozumel from a few cities in the U.S. and Mexico, including Cancun.
There is only one airline offering flights from Cancun to Cozumel, and that’s MAYAir.
They offer one flight on Monday and Friday at 5pm, and three on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9am, 4pm and 6pm. For tickets, you need to book through the MAYAir site.
You can also book a seat on charter flight to Cozumel with Starlit Aviation for about the same price as the MAYAir ticket.
Unlike the commercial MAYAir flight, Starlit can accommodate for other departure times because they operate a private plane to Cozumel.
Cozumel Ground Transportation
Once you arrive at the Cozumel airport, you can take a taxi to your Cozumel hotel, or book a private transportation service.

Cozumel is an island, so you can’t actually drive to it. To get to Cozumel by car, you’ll drive to Playa del Carmen, park your car there, and take the ferry service to Cozumel.
I only recommend the car if you’ll be visiting other places in the Yucatan Peninsula besides Cozumel — if not, opt for the private shuttle.
If you drive your rental car to Playa del Carmen, you’ll have to pay for parking in a private lot because you can’t take the car to Cozumel.
The closest Playa del Carmen parking lot to the ferry is located here; they have a day rate of $300 Mexican pesos ($15 USD), or $15 pesos ($1 USD) per hour.
However, if you’re planning to explore other places in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, like Tulum, Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins, Valladolid and Merida, then get a rental car.

Mexico car rental rates vary, but figure about $25 USD per day for an economy car if you decline the rental company’s insurance, and about $35 USD per day for full coverage.
Note: You do need Mexico car insurance, as you’ll see below.
If you’ve looked online for a Mexico rental car, you might see $5 USD rentals. If this rate seems too good to be true — that’s because they are!
This is the base price for just the car, not including insurance, taxes, fees, etc. To be safe, assume the car will be at least $25 USD per day.

🤔 Do I need Mexico Car Insurance?
Yes — At the minimum, you need Personal Liability Insurance to drive in Mexico.

I have been in Mexico long enough, and heard enough horror stories, that I 100% always tell people not to rely on this.
If you do opt for credit card coverage, call them before your Cozumel vacation and double check their coverage policy, so you know you’re comfortable with it.

In recent years, many Mexico car rental companies are no longer accepting credit card insurance — so be prepared with a backup plan — or purchase full coverage insurance.

Is it safe to drive from Cancun to Playa del Carmen?
For the majority of travelers, yes, it’s perfectly safe to dive anywhere in the Yucatan Peninsula.
The road from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is Highway 307 (Carretera Cancún-Chetumal). It’s not a big highway, but rather, a well-maintained road that’s comfortable to drive on, even in a compact car.
Note: A bigger car or SUV is better if you’re exploring other places in Yucatan.
From the airport, you’ll find lots of signs directing you to Highway 307. You then just have to take this one road for a simple, straight shot drive all the way to Playa del Carmen.
Depending on traffic and weather conditions, the Cancun to Playa del Carmen drive time is just one hour.
While it’s not often advisable to drive at night in Mexico, you should be fine on this road at night.
Highway 307 is frequented by tourists driving from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen, so the government keeps it nice and safe.
Note: Don’t speed; there’s always police checkpoints.

There’s always at least one police checkpoint on Highway 307, just as you exit Cancun city limits on the highway; though there may be additional checkpoints.
For most drivers, you’ll just slow down to pass the checkpoint, and be on your merry way.
For some, the police may ask you to pull over, see your rental car papers, your driver’s license, etc. — so have these documents handy.
This is standard procedure to check that you don’t have anything illegal, aren’t driving without a license and aren’t drunk on the Cancun to Playa drive.
5️⃣ Useful Mexico Driving Tips
- Just like in the U.S. and Europe, you drive on the right side in Mexico.
- Beware of topes in Mexico! These are speed bumps, and they are all over, even on highways. Often, there’s no sign alerting you to them — so keep your eyes on the road because some topes are larger than others, and can cause damage to your car.
- Mexico speed limit signs are in kilometers per hour, not miles per hour. Don’t worry about math for the conversion rate; just match the speedometer number to the number on the road sign.
- Keep your car rental paperwork, ie. proof of insurance, car rental agreement and anything else they gave you, within reach.

This is the cheapest way to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun that offers a direct route. (The colectivo is cheaper, but there’s no direct route.)
The ADO Cancun to Playa del Carmen bus departs from Cancun Airport all day, about every 30-60 minutes, from all airport terminals.

This has been the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen ADO bus schedule for some time now, but double check the ADO website, as it can change at any time.

After you clear Customs and start walking outside, you’ll pass all the car rental booths and an ADO bus booth.
You can buy a ticket there, but first check outside to see if there’s a bus. If there is, you can buy a one-way trip ticket as you board.
🚌 Where’s the Playa del Carmen bus station?
There’s only one bus stop in Playa del Carmen, the ADO Terminal Turistica Playa Del Carmen. It’s located on 5th Avenue and Avenida Benito Juarez (📍map).
From there, it’s a short walk of about five minutes to the Playa del Carmen ferry pier, located next to Parque Fundadores on 5th Avenue.

Taxi from Cancun to Cozumel (Worst Way to Get to Cozumel)
In my opinion, a Cancun to Cozumel taxi is your worst option.
Barring an emergency situation, I’d recommend you use the private Cancun Airport transportation or rent a car to get to Cozumel from Cancun. Here’s why:
How much is a taxi from Cancun to Cozumel?
Short answer: You could pay up to $100 USD, depending on your luck (or unluck).
“Normal” taxis aren’t allowed inside Cancun Airport; only sanctioned airport taxis. Cancun Airport cabs have to pay a special tax to be able to enter — and that fee is passed down to you.
Beyond this fee, sadly, scamming travelers isn’t uncommon with taxis in Mexico (or anywhere, really).
As you’re nearing the airport exit, you’ll start to be approached by the Cancun Airport taxi services.
Depending on how they judge your appearance (ie. how well you’re dressed, if you look like it’s your first time in Mexico, etc.), they’ll give you that price.
For this reason, you might get a one-way price of $75-$100 USD, which is about the cost of a luxury private transfer.

In short, save yourself the hassle and haggle and book the Cancun to Playa shuttle.

🚨 A Word of Warning About Cancun Taxis
Cancun taxi drivers are famous for tricking people into taking a taxi. They’ll say there aren’t rental cars available, or the buses aren’t running, or anything they think will get you in their cab.
Take what they say with a grain of salt, and only believe what you’ve seen with your own eyes.
🤑 Set the Price Before You Get In
With Mexico taxis, you negotiate and agree on the fare before taking the cab, as many don’t don’t have meters.
If you don’t know this and just jump in the taxi, they will throw out some exorbitant price when you arrive in Playa del Carmen — so agree on a firm price before getting in the taxi.

Is there Uber in Cancun?
Sort Of — The answer to this question is tricky. While Uber is legal in Cancun, it’s very rarely used, even by Cancun locals.
In 2023, a court ruled Uber can operate in Cancun, but to say Cancun taxi drivers weren’t thrilled is an understatement.
In fact, the two groups have been known to publicly clash, and most locals and visitors simply stay away from Cancun Uber for this reason.
Can I take Uber from Cancun to Cozumel?
Maybe — Technically, you can. However, given that is a 2.5 hour round trip drive, you might not find anyone who will accept the trip on a whim.
Now, that’s not to say you won’t — so if you do want to try to Uber to Playa del Carmen from Cancun, here’s what you’ll do:
To use Uber, fully exit the Cancun Airport CUN with all your luggage, and walk about 10 minutes in the (hot and humid 🥵) Cancun weather to the main road, then call your Uber.
Since Cancun Uber isn’t popular, and you’re requesting a very long trip, you may get an Uber, or you may not.
Is there Uber in Cozumel Mexico?
No — Once in Cozumel, you’ll also have to get around by taxi or with your Cozumel rental car.
You can also do one of the popular Cozumel Jeep tours, or get a Cozumel scooter rental. I did this the last time I was traveling to Cozumel, and had so much fun exploring the whole island.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen Colectivo
Wondering, What’s the cheapest way to get from Cancun to Cozumel? That would definitely be the colectivo, as it’s only about $2 USD per person, per ride.
However, you get what you pay for — and this is not one of the comfortable ways to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun.
The first thing you need to know is the colectivo (small, shared van) is cheaper than the ADO bus, but only by about $8 USD.
For how inconvenient this trip ends up being, it’s not worth sacrificing so much travel time and comfort for a few bucks.
🚐 How to take the Cancun COLECTIVO to Playa del Carmen
There’s no direct Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen colectivo, so you first need to take a bus from Cancun Airport to Downtown Cancun.
From ADO Downtown Cancun (📍map), you then take the Playa Express colectivo, located directly in front of the bus station entrance.
While colectivos are cheap, you’ll never hear anyone call them “comfortable.”
The ride itself is bumpy, and there’s never AC on the colectivo, which you do want in the tropics! There’s also no luggage storage, so you have to hold anything you have with you.
In short — Save yourself the hassle, and just book an ADO ticket!

For clarity, there’s no ferry from Cancun to Cozumel Mexico. The ferry you need is the Playa del Carmen to Cozumel Island ferry.
The info you’ll find below is about the passenger ferry, but that’s also a car ferry to Cozumel, though it’s a bit inconvenient to use.
