Puerto Escondido, meaning “hidden port,” has some of the best beaches in Mexico.

The plankton in the lagoon only emit light when they’re disturbed, so if you want to see them glow in the dark, get ready to jump into the water!

Puerto Escondido has both world-class surfing for the pros, and great surf breaks for beginners.

Puerto Escondido, a surfer hotspot since the 1950s, is one of the best Mexican surf towns.

The region is known for its massive barrels and huge waves, but it is also home to more beginner-friendly beaches — ideal for booking your surf lessons.

The town’s most famous surf spot is Playa Zicatela, reserved only for the pros and International surfing competitions.

It is world-renowned for having some of the craziest beach breaks, and the 10-foot-tall (3 m) Mexican Pipeline wave.

Although this particular beach is not for beginners, it is the perfect place for surf viewing enthusiasts.

The town surrounding the beach is also filled with various surf shops and amazing restaurants.

However, if you’re a beginner surfer or a longboarder, several beaches in the region have gentler waves, like Playa Carrizalillo.

This beach is also an excellent place for swimming and snorkeling, so it’s ideal for non-surfers as well.

If you haven’t surfed before, or are a little rusty, these private instructors in Puerto Escondido with Ari will help you learn the basics, catch your first wave, or improve your technique.

The best time to see whales in Puerto Escondido is from December to March, though you may get lucky and see some in November and April.

However, if you visit in winter, you’re almost guaranteed to see some.

Along with providing beautiful scenery and epic adventures, the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains are also home to 16 different ethnic groups.

☕️ Fun Fact: Prior to the 1930s, there was no Puerto Escondido town, as they had no potable water source back then, so on one lived there.

It was basically just a port town by day, and their main export was coffee — so you know the coffee here is really good.

16. Go Birdwatching in Puerto Escondido

man bird-watching with binoculars in oaxaca mexico

During the rainy season, Río Manialtepec (river) breaks through the sandbar, transforming Laguna Manialtepec (lagoon) into a tidal estuary.

This attracts numerous species of birds to the lagoon — including ibis, spoonbills, herons, and parrots — as they come to feed.

For bird-watchers, this is one of the best places on the Oaxacan coast.

Book this Birdwatching Near Puerto Escondido Tour and head to Manialtepec Lagoon with a knowledgeable guide.

One of the most off the beaten path places to visit in Oaxaca is Lagunas de Chacahua National Park (usually just called Chacahua, and pronounced cha-caw-wah).

This Mexico national park in Oaxaca has gained in popularity in recent years, thanks to social media and YouTube.

Chacahua is one of those Oaxaca Mexico beaches to think, admire nature, surf (or take Oaxaca surf lessons), lay in a hammock, read a good book, go for a swim, watch the sunset and eat fresh seafood.

The WiFi is basically nonexistent, though more and more places have Starlink these days, so this is the perfect place to find peace and quiet.

Even during the peak season in Puerto Escondido, from about November to May, there’s rarely crowds in Chacahua.

This island sits on the Pacific Ocean, and is a popular destination with surfers and backpackers, but you can also book a Chacahua hotel and stay a while.

30. Walk the Andador Escénico (Scenic Walk)

beachfront walkway - Andador Escénico (Scenic Walk) in Puerto Escondido
The Andador Escénico Walk is a great option if you’re looking for unique things to do in Puerto Escondido. (Photo: Mick Gardiner via Flickr)

Located near Downtown Puerto Escondido, the Andador Escénico walkway (AKA Andador Turístico) was initially deemed too difficult to be built by the Oaxacan state.

The authorities argued it was an “impossible dream.” However, in 1992, Efrén Bruciaga and 200 workers spent three months building it.

The Andador Escénico runs from the western end of Playa Principal to an overlook called Sueño Posible, which means a “possible dream” in Spanish.

The walkway itself starts on a small street just past the Southern end of Bahía Principal Beach.

The Sueño Posible viewpoint is about a one-mile walk (1.6 km) from there. If you plan on going, wear a good pair of shoes.

Some areas of the walkway have been battered by the waves, leading to structural issues along the way — so watch out and be careful on the Andador Escénico.

⚠️ Update: The first time I went here, it was nice. The second time, it was much more sketchy, so exercise caution if you visit, and don’t go at night.
