How to Get to Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is easy to reach, as it’s located just a short ferry ride from Cancun.

There are three ferry ports that go between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, but most will go via the Ultramar Ferry at Puerto Juárez.

Located near the Zona Hotelera (Cancun Hotel Zone), this ferry leaves every half-hour from 6:30am-11pm, and you can buy tickets right at the dock.

Note: We do our best to keep this site updated, but schedules can change with little notice 🛳 so please double check the Isla Mujeres ferry schedule here.

Getting to Isla Holbox takes a bit more time — though as someone who’s been, I promise it’s well worth the trek.

Step 1: Get to Chiquilá, Mexico

First, take the ADO bus or drive your rental car to the small town of Chiquilá.

It’s located about 2-2.5 hours from Cancun and/or Tulum, and 3.5-4 hours from Mérida — though it’s an easy drive from anywhere in the Yucatán.

⚠️ Note: Cars are not allowed on the island. If you’re driving to Chiquilá, you’ll need to leave your car in one of the paid parking lots near the dock.

Step 2: Take the ferry to Isla Holbox

At the Chiquilá Port Dock, you’ll buy a ticket for the ferry to Holbox Island. They cost $330 MXN pesos each way (about $17 USD).

There are two companies offering the same trip, Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos, and it doesn’t matter which one you take.

Ferries depart every hour, from 6:30am-9:30pm, and the ride takes about 30 minutes. 🛳 To check the Isla Holbox ferry schedule, head here.

The ferry ride is beautiful and gives you a sneak peek of the island’s natural beauty, and only adds to the adventure.

Transportation on the Islands

On Isla Mujeres, getting around is easy and fun because the streets are lively and full of energy, day and night.

The island is small enough to walk to most places, but you can also rent a golf cart, take taxis, rent scooters, or use the inexpensive Isleños Bus.

Isla Holbox

Cars are prohibited on Isla Holbox, so the main ways to get around on that island include renting a golf cart or bike, walking, or hailing the golf cart taxis.

While the “no cars on Holbox Island” thing might be weird for some, this makes for a more relaxed and natural island vibe, and adds to the overall charm.

Isla Mujeres: Vibrant and Bustling

Isla Mujeres has a variety of accommodations, restaurants, and shops.

Isla Mujeres is lively, full of energy, and a popular tourist spot thanks to its proximity to Cancun — though it was once little more than a small fishing village.

The main streets (like Calle Hidalgo) located near downtown and Playa Norte (world-famous North Beach) are full of colorful shops, restaurants, and bars.

The center and south end of the island are quieter areas, where the locals live — so if you’re looking for an Isla Mujeres Airbnb, these are your areas.

Isla Holbox: Relaxed, Rustic and Bohemian

Isla Holbox is more laid-back and rustic — though it has become a lot more fancy in the last few years as tourism has increased.

However, the island has kept its charm, and is perfect for relaxing at what’s considered one of the safest and best beach towns in Mexico.

There are no cars allowed on Holbox Island, and the sandy streets are lined with palm trees. It’s a great place to unwind and enjoy nature.

No matter which island you end of going to, be on the lookout for the marquesitas street vendors at night.

Marquesitas (mar-kay-see-tas), aka Mexican crepes, are crepes filled with Nutella chocolate and shredded cheese. A weird combo for some, but they’re delish 🤤
