Remember Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell? Here’s what Mark-Paul Gosselaar Looks Like Now

In 1989, a 15-year-old from Panorama City, California walked onto a Saturday morning set and became the coolest kid in America.

Zack Morris — quick-talking, scheme-running, time-stopping Zack Morris — was the guy every teenage boy wanted to be and every teenage girl had a poster of.

The show was Saved by the Bell. The kid was Mark-Paul Gosselaar. And nothing about what came next followed the script you’d expect.

Here’s the thing about Gosselaar that most people don’t know: that blond hair wasn’t real. Not a strand of it.

His natural color is brown, and NBC bleached it for every single episode of Saved by the Bell’s run.

When the 2020 Peacock reboot came calling, he wore a wig to reprise the role. Zack Morris was, in more ways than one, a costume.

The man underneath turned out to be far more interesting.

From Bayside to the Precinct

When Saved by the Bell wrapped in 1993, Gosselaar did what almost no teen idol successfully does — he pivoted to drama and made it stick.

He spent four seasons as Detective John Clark Jr. on NYPD Blue, one of the most respected cop dramas in television history.

Critics noticed. Audiences who had written him off as a sitcom kid were forced to reconsider. He didn’t stop there.

• Franklin & Bash on TNT ran four seasons.
• Pitch on Fox cast him as a veteran MLB catcher — a role that required serious physical preparation.
• The Passage on Fox gave him another lead.

Each role was different. None of them traded on nostalgia.

Then came Found on NBC, and Gosselaar went somewhere genuinely dark. He played “Sir” — a manipulative kidnapper being held captive by his former victim.

The role was so psychologically consuming that he told People in 2023 that playing an aggressive, controlling character followed him home.

His wife eventually sat him down and said: “That’s not the guy I married.” He went to therapy. The show ran through 2025.

By 2025, at 51, he was directing episodes of the same show he starred in. “I’m prouder of directing than playing Zack again,” he said that year.

The Family Man Nobody Talks About

Off-screen, Gosselaar has built a life that looks nothing like Hollywood’s usual story.

He’s been married since 2012 to Catriona McGinn, an advertising executive he proposed to in 2011.

Their wedding at a winery in Santa Ynez, California included a bagpiper and kilts — nod to McGinn’s Scottish heritage. Their honeymoon was in Italy.

They have two children together: Dekker Edward, born 2013, and Lachlyn Hope, born 2015.

Gosselaar also has two older children from his first marriage to model Lisa Ann Russell, which lasted from 1996 to 2011. Four kids total.

Ask him how he describes himself and the answer is consistent. “I’m a husband first, a father second, and an actor third,” he told The Jennifer Hudson Show in January 2025.

“My day revolves around making sure my wife is good and making sure the kids are good.”

His teenage son once came home from school to report: “Dad, the girls love you!” Gosselaar set him straight immediately. “No,” he said. “They love Zack Morris.”

What He Looks Like Now

Gosselaar turns 52 in March 2026. He’s six feet tall, brown-haired, and by every account, in better physical shape than most men half his age.

Motocross, cycling, auto racing, and a pilot’s license keep him occupied when he’s not on set.

He sold his Sherman Oaks home in 2022 for a reported $5.3 million after renting it out for years, and now lives outside Los Angeles with his family.

The Zack Morris jawline is still there. The swagger has matured into something quieter.

He looks like a man who figured out who he actually was, separate from the character that made him famous — and made peace with both.

The Bell Still Rings for Mark-Paul

Gosselaar hasn’t run from his past.

He reprised Zack Morris in the 2020 Peacock revival — older, slightly chastened, with a teenage son of his own. He’s appeared on Tonight Show reunion sketches.

He participated in Kid 90, director Soleil Moon Frye’s documentary about growing up as a child star in the ’90s, and talked honestly about what that experience was actually like.

What he won’t do is let his own kids follow the same path. He’s said as much publicly. He knows what fame at 15 costs, and he’s not selling it to the next generation.

Thirty-five years after Bayside High, Mark-Paul Gosselaar is still working, still married, still racing motorcycles, and still — by his own account — putting his family first.

The hair is darker now. The career is deeper. And the guy who spent years trying to escape Zack Morris has finally found something better to be: Himself.
