6 Tips for Tulum Glamping

TIP #1: Don’t forget the “glam” in glamping

The thing with glamping is, there are levels — and what one person might call glamping, someone else might consider just plain old camping. Keep in mind that just because you’re traveling to a great place like Tulum, Mexico, your accommodation can still make, or break, your trip; especially when glamping.

The Top 10 Tulum glamping Airbnbs featured in this article all definitely have that WOW! factor. I think we can all agree that booking a the perfect Airbnb will really set the tone for you having the perfect Tulum glamping vacation, because at the end of the day, there’s no point in calling it glamping if you don’t have the glam. Amirite?!

When glamping, the point really is to have the best of both worlds: nature and comfort. On average, gamping is much pricier than camping in Tulum, but you get what you pay for in the form of hotel style services and cushy amenities. If you’ve never used Airbnb before, sign up by clicking the coupon below and you can get up to $60 off your Tulum glamping stay.

TIP #2: Seek out a Super Host

Airbnb Super Hosts have a verified check mark ✅ next to their name, and they take their Tulum Airbnb business seriously. They have been vetted by Airbnb, and know how to give Tulum visitors the royal treatment. To maintain Super Host status, these folks must receive consistently high marks in all areas of hospitality, from cleanliness and ambiance, to amenities and value for the price.

TIP #3: As the saying goes; Location, Location, Location.”

All Airbnbs featured in this article are located in the best neighborhoods in Tulum — including the Tulum Beach, and in the Tulum Town (AKA Downtown Tulum) neighborhoods of Colonia Huracanes and Villas Tulum. Below is a map of Tulum so you can get a better understanding of the town layout and a visual on where these neighborhoods are located.

Keep in mind that if by the end of this article you decide glamping in Tulum isn’t for you, the Aldea Zama neighborhood has some of the best Airbnbs in Tulum. Head to this article to explore your Tulum Airbnb options in Aldea Zama!

TIP #4: Do you need strong WiFi in Tulum?

Tulum isn’t known for having strong WiFi at all, and even less so at glamping places. If you have to work during your trip, or need strong WiFi for streaming, read each listing carefully and double check with the host before booking so they can tell you what speeds to expect.

TIP #5: Can you live with minimal electricity? …and possibly without AC?

Take a second to recall that Tulum is located in the tropics, in basically a beach-jungle. Be aware it’s hot and humid for most of the year. While some of the best Tulum glamping options below do have AC, some just have fans. In addition, nearly all places on the Tulum Beach (this includes high end hotels and hostels alike) have electricity regulations; with most only offering electric from about sundown to sunrise.

TIP #6: How do you feel about critters?!

Tulum’s jungle location means you may encounter colorful tropical birds, curious monkeys, beautiful butterflies, and adorable coatis, like the one in the ig photo above! It also means you might encounter scorpions (in Tulum, it’s usually not the poisonous kind), spiders, and of course, mosquitoes.

🦟 Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack your eco-friendly bug spray and anti-mosquito braceletand Head to this article for more Tulum packing tips.

What Past Guests Have Said:

This was our first time experiencing glamping, and the place was so peaceful and relaxing. We were surprised to receive complimentary snacks and coffee delivered to our ‘doorstep’ each morning. The staff serviced our room each day when we were out, which was much appreciated. The location is right on the beach strip, but the scenery in the hotel makes you feel like you’re in the jungle a bit.”

“My fiancée and I have stayed at several glamping sites across the states and Mexico. This is one of the best. There is a full bathroom IN the tent. Moreover, it is tastefully decorated and the manager is very accommodating. Lastly, for the price, it is one of the most affordable accommodation options in the hotel zone.”

“They warmly greeted us and gave us a tour of the beautiful little property and provided amazing recommendations for our time there. I can not say enough about the customer service we experienced. The place itself is beautiful and unique, and right out of the craziness of the main strip while still being very close and accessible… We will certainly be recommending this special place to friends!

Let’s real talk for a second, shall we?

These two Jungle Eco Tree Houses have about 500 reviews in total, and one has a perfect 5 star review, and the other, a near-perfect 4.98 stars. That is no easy feat. Super Hosts Karolien and Alberto are clearly doing something right at their two amazing Tulum glamping Airbnbs.

Also — It’s a freakin’ tree house!!! Who doesn’t want to stay in a real, actual tree house?!

As with most tree houses, these geodesic glamping domes are located out in nature, surrounded by the Tulum jungle, with minimal light pollution so you can see thousands of stars at night. Inside the dome, there’s queen-size bed in Dome 1 and king-size bed in Dome 2, private bathroom, electric outlets and a high speed fan; outside, there’s an outdoor shower, and spacious private dock with table and chairs to enjoy your complimentary breakfast.

If you want to be in nature, but still have easy access to town and things to do in Tulum, this is the glamping choice for you! By car, you’re only 10-15 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Tulum Town (AKA Downtown Tulum), and also just 20 minutes walking from some of the best cenotes in Tulum.

🌳Tulum Glamping Tree House Pro Tips:

  1. You may want a rental car if you book one of the tree houses.
  2. Don’t forget to pack your eco-friendly bug spray and anti-mosquito bracelet 🦟
  3. There is no WiFi on the property.

What Past Guests Have Said:

Wish I could give this place a million stars! SO MUCH BETTER than we even expected!! This is an EXPERIENCE more than a stay, Karolien and Alberto think of EVERYTHING!

“Just WOW. If you love nature this is the place for you! It was nice to get back to Mother earth and be separated from the party that comes with Mexico. Alberto & Karolien were so sweet and made our stay very personal! Breakfast served on pulley system was so cool! Happy to be a part of an Eco-friendly stay in Tulum. Book it, you wont regret it!

“The best glamping experience! So magical! Cant wait to go back.

One of the coolest airbnbs I’ve ever stayed in. Its off the beaten path and Karolien and Alberto take very good care of you. Highly recommend.”

Nativus Glamping & Cenote Tulum isn’t on Airbnb at the moment, but it’s too amazing of a Tulum glamping option not to include on the list. In fact, some would say Nativus is the best place for glamping in Tulum because it even has a cenote on-site! During your stay, you have use of the Nativus private dock, as well as kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling gear to enjoy at the cenote.

Each elegant glamping tent at Nativus provides guests with modern conveniences set amongst Tulum’s beautiful jungle nature. Get a good night’s rest on your king-size bed, and start the day right with a complimentary, and healthy, breakfast. Tents have bathrooms inside and an outdoor shower, and are cleaned daily with strict sanitizing protocols.

Located on the Tulum Beach Road, the best way to get around is by bike. Nativus offers bike rentals, as well as yoga and relaxing sound healing sessions at their Yoga Palapa.

What Past Guests Have Said:

“This property is a glamping paradise. Small property. Quiet. A peaceful Cenote in the back to paddle board or kayak. There’s a beautiful staff that makes fresh breakfast and coffee upon request. The property is situated at the southern part of the popular beach strip in Tulum. The first few days I was in the busier area which is basically the center part of the Tulum beach strip. If you want the true Tulum feel with peace as well as vibes, you want to be on the southern part of Tulum Beach Mexico!”

“Nativus was amazing for my 5 day, solo stay. I enjoyed & relaxed. Very peaceful and safe. Breakfast was nice, I loved being able to have a bike during all hours of the day. I also loved the cenote and the location of Nativus. It was south of Tulum, but close enough biking distance and near everything.”

Exceeded our expectations! We loved everything about this place. You’re literally glamping in the jungles but for glamping, it couldn’t be more luxurious. The beds were so soft and everything was comfy. No AC but you has two fans and everything is run on solar. They are very eco conscious. The care and exceptional service was so special.

Hostel TuboTulum is a unique concept, and one of the most original, best hostels in Tulum. Each room, or tube, is a repurposed, large concrete pipe! This is the very spirit of Tulum eco-chic — and sustainable travel in Mexico. All tubes have a double bed and air conditioning, a very posh touch in a rather minimal hostel.

Keep in mind that the rooms are small, but cozy. They are about 8.5-feet-tall and also wide, so the tube is simply just a place to sleep, lay down and relax. For everything else, head outside.

Onsite at TuboTulum Hostel, enjoy the common areas with gardens and swings, shared kitchen and shared bathrooms. For solo travelers, it’s quite easy to make new friends and socialize at the TuboTulum.

🐶 Traveling with a furry friend? This is one of the few pet friendly hostels in Tulum.

What Past Guests Have Said:

“The tube hotel was so so fun!! My husband is a tall guy and he could totally stand up in the tube so they are quite big. The breakfast was nice. And I got to play with the resident cat, Sushi. Any place that has a cat gets high ratings from me. :)”

“Tubo Tulum is a super cute and calm place. The staff is very nice and can help you with all your questions. Sleeping in the tube is a great experience and all of them have an AC. The shared showers are big and you can lock your own shower space. You can easily rent their bikes for a day or half a day- with the bike you can reach all the hot spots in a few minutes… I would definitely recommend this Hostel, we had an amazing stay!

“Cute spot on the way towards the beach. Cozy and unique tube room with AC was all I needed 🙂 Facilities in good condition, friendly folks. Plus yummy breakfast in the morning included.”

If you’re looking for a peaceful place, away from the crowds and in contact with nature, but still quite comfortable, this is the Tulum Eco-Cabin for you. It is located in an area called Villas Tulum, close to Downtown Tulum (AKA Tulum Town), but still secluded enough so you’ll get to fall asleep to the sounds of uninterrupted nature and see thousands stars at night.

This is the perfect Tulum eco-lodge to practice, sustainable, responsible, and ethical tourism in Mexico… though do know what you’re signing up for with this off the beaten path choice. If you’re deathly afraid of bugs and need WiFi at all times, skip this one.

A message from the host, Tania:

🌳 Building and living in this place has made me really be more conscious about our way of living, consuming and surrounding ourselves. You will be very thankful after this experience, even if you stay just for a few days. Believe me, you will no longer be the same. This space is the perfect spot for finding peace, reconnecting with yourself and connecting with nature.

For anyone wanting a unique, natural experience, this cabin has a lot of modern amenities — like jacuzzi tub 😍!!!! — for how rustic it is. There’s a swimming pool and you’re in close proximity to all of the best cenotes in Tulum. Your cabin also has a king-size bed with mosquito netting and private bathroom.

This environmentally-friendly cabin operates 100% off solar panels, and there are enough so energy doesn’t often run out. It also does have WiFi, but as you’d imagine, service is often spotty. There are three other cabins on the property that share a communal kitchen, and breakfast is available at an additional fee and upon request.

Pro Tips: You will need a rental car if you’re staying here… and don’t forget to pack your eco-friendly bug spray and anti-mosquito bracelet 🦟

If the Cabin linked above isn’t available, there are 3 other Eco-Cabins on this property!

What Past Guests Have Said:

“An awesome bungalow in the jungle, perfect for a couple’s getaway or just a place to unwind. The rain-shower and HUGE double bath spa was a great touch. Essential to have a car because it is way down a dirt road and a little far from the main area of tulum, but it’s close to other local towns, food stands, cenotes, and great souvenir shops.”

“This magical jungle cabana was beyond anything we’d imagined, and my only regret is not spending our whole stay in Tulum here! It’s a beautifully appointed sanctuary far enough away from everything to get a real sense of serenity and nature, but close enough to easily access the main strip and beaches. We slept better than we have in years and will most definitely stay again when we return to Tulum. Tania is a warm and gentle host who has created something truly special.”

“Everything was way better than expected. The location is to die for and the cabin where we stayed was just as expected. Tania is such a good host and helpful for whatever we needed. We would totally recommend that place.”

🐒🐒🐒 “Very peaceful and beautiful! Saw monkeys and amazing nature! Loved it, would stay again!”

What Past Guests Have Said:

Fantastic location, easy walking/biking distance to all the local restaurants and beach clubs. Having access to the beach club across the street is a great advantage. Also, very helpful that parking is on premise! When we were there, there was also security all night. Andres was very responsive and easy to communicate with.”

AC works GREAT. Kitchen is functional. Made a couple meals with no problems. Living in a shipping container was more fun than I thought! Easy access to Coco Ltd across the street for pool and beach. Bed was comfy. Onsite host was very friendly. Turndown service was a nice bonus!”

Cool and quirky little spot. Allows you to be on tulum beach (jungle side)… without having to pay the high hotel fees. 10 min walk to the most popular area of the strip made it convenient and good value.”

“This has to be the nicest Airbnb I have ever been to, the ocean master suite is incredible. Its paradise and the owners are soooo cool. Thank you for a great stay and can’t wait to come back! It was hard to leave. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

“Libelula is a gem located on the beach within the Sian Ka’an reserve. The host and staff were wonderful. Karla was really responsive and reliable if we had any questions and made sure we checked in successful. The Sea Cabana is really cool to stay in. You have to walk a little towards the main area of the property to get WiFi but once there, the signal was strong and I could work remotely. If you like more peace and quiet from the clustered hotels on the playa, check this place out.”

“Was it all a dream? I never knew paradise had a name until I visited Libelula.”

“WOW! WOW! WOW! Me and my friend stayed three nights at the Libulela and I don’t think I have ever experienced anything liked it. I have spent the past 8 years almost constantly traveling and never ever have I come close to the quality and service level Karla and her husband provides. They are honest and not greedy, they will happily recommend restaurants in the area (but to be honest, eat at the Libelula, its BETTER and cheaper than most places).”

“Casa Nawal exceed our expectations. I highly recommend the beach front tents, if you love the sound of the ocean and like falling asleep to it. The staff are kind and helpful. They use copal at night around the whole glamp ground to cleanse the energy as well as keep mosquitoes away. Waking up every morning and being able to wall to the beach in 20 seconds to enjoy the sunrise and meditate was truly amazing… Just book this place already and stop reading this review. You’ll love it here.”

OMG what an AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL place!!! It it’s easily worth 2-3x the price. It’s off the grid on a VERY beautiful and peaceful part of the beach. The aura of this place is off the charts, I was just floored as I was walking through the tent area towards the beach, my girlfriend and I instantly fell in love. We even pushed our flight back and stayed another day! We are definitely going to stay here again in the future on militiamen occasions. A HIDDEN GEM!!!

Geodesic Glamping Dome Features

Admittedly, the Geodesic Tree Houses are only kinda, sorta, maybe 🤔, glamping. However, they are “glamping enough,” and in one review, someone actually said “I went here without expectations and I swear I had an out of body experience that changed my life,” so the domes became Bonus #11 on what was supposed to be a Top 10 Tulum glamping list.

These unique geodesic dome homes are located in the middle of the jungle and steps from the beach. They are totally eco-friendly, made of wood, hemp fiber and coconut fiber from the Yucatan Peninsula, with bamboo wood interior. Sleep under the stars, from the comfort of your queen-size bed and in the AC. The dome interior is minimal, but there is a private bathroom.

What Past Guests Have Said:

“I went here without expectations and I swear I had an out of body experience that changed my life. It was so unexpected and breathtaking. I was in the clouds, above the trees with pure silence in a place that has indescribable beauty. You can’t imagine what it’s like until you go so book NOW. If you have an adventurous spirit and want to try a dome, THIS IS THE PLACE. The food on the property is the best I have had in the Yucatán. You’ll leave refreshed and with an unforgettable experience.

“Words don’t explain how magical and unique this was! The staff had such good energy from check in to checkout. Couldn’t help but smile for our entire stay! Would definitely come back and do exact same trip!”

“The space was very unique and beautiful. The windows above the bed were absolutely gorgeous. You could watch the stars at night and see the gorgeous greenery during the day. The staff were so helpful and accommodating, they also had so many tips for tulum while I visited.”

“I’ve traveled and worked in 33 countries across 4 continents over a 3 year time period. This was by far the most amazing place I have stayed. The staff, the space, the location, and the views. This is the best place in the world. Thank you guys so much for being the best air bnb in the world. ❤️

Tulum Mexico Travel FAQs

Is Tulum Mexico safe?

Is Mexico safe for travel? is the # 1 most asked question about visiting anywhere in the country. Given the mainstream media’s demonization of the entire country, Mexico has a very bad wrap. However, this is a huge country, and yes, there are parts you should avoid… but chances are you weren’t planning to head to those parts anyway.

Tulum is not one of those parts! In fact, the entire Yucatan Peninsula is considered quite safe, not just Tulum. For the most part, all places in Mexico that promote tourism are by-and-large, safe. As tourism is Mexico’s largest source of income, the federal and local governments of Mexico’s top travel destinations do their part to maintain safety.

💡 Pro Tip: Always remember that no place on Earth is 100% safe.

Should I get travel insurance for Mexico?

Want an added level of security and peace of mind during these strange travel times? Just as you insure your car, home and body, you can also insure your luggage, belongings and health while traveling.

I’ll be honest, when I first started traveling solo, I wasn’t insured. However, after years of solo traveling, I wised up… now, I even have a whole page of this website dedicated to travel insurance, because it’s just that important!

10 General travel safety tips
  1. Always listen to your intuition — because your intuition is always right.
  2. If you get a sketchy or uneasy feeling about a person or place, get away from that person or place asap. Don’t worry about making a kind, nice or politically correct exit from a creepy person or bad situation — Just get away fast.
  3. Don’t walk home alone at night.
  4. Don’t keep your phone, keys, wallet, passport, or anything valuable in your back pocket.
  5. Learn some basic Spanish. If you can’t learn it, save this infographic as an image on your phone so you have something to use even if you’re off-WiFi.
  6. Take all of your belongings into the bathroom with you, rather than asking a cafe/bar neighbor to watch your things. This is annoying, for sure, but it works to not get your stuff stolen.
  7. Speaking of bar neighbors… don’t take drinks from strangers and/or leave your drink unattended.
  8. Don’t wear flashy clothes, expensive jewelry, designer sunglasses, etc.
  9. Keep some cash in your pocket so you don’t have to pull your whole wallet out every time you need to pay.
  10. When in doubt: Get Travel Insurance!

The closest airport is Cancun International Airport (code: CUN), which is great because there’s direct flights to Cancun from nearly all major U.S. cities. Do I need a visa to visit Tulum, Mexico?

No, you don’t need a visa to travel to Mexico from the U.S. This is just one of several the reasons why Mexico is one of the best travel destinations from the U.S.! Find out all the others in the linked article.

When you arrive in Mexico and go through Customs and Immigration, you’ll receive a 180-day FMM tourist visa. This is a small piece of paper you need to hold on to so you can give it back to Immigration at the airport when you leave the country.

There is no charge for the FMM, but if you lose yours, there’s a fine of about $600 pesos ($30). You’ll also need to get to the airport an extra hour early to fill out the lost visa paperwork — Bottom line: Don’t lose your FMM!

What’s the Best Time to Visit Tulum?

Weather-wise, the best time of year to visit Tulum Mexico is during the fall/winter months from October-March, when the weather’s cooler and less humid. The busiest months for tourism are December-January during the winter break/holidays, and March-April with the spring break crowd. Located in the tropics, it rains (even pours ☔️) pretty much daily during the peak of the Tulum rainy season, June-September.

Tulum Weather

Below is an idea of what you can expect from Tulum Mexico weather, and in general, Yucatan weather averages. Tulum’s rainy season tends to run from mid-May through mid-October — and you can expect heavy rain storms during the rainy season. This is also Hurricane Season, and being right on the Caribbean Sea, Tulum is susceptible.

😥 Pro Tip: Tulum temperatures often feel 10°F higher because of humidity. Make sure to pack your reusable LifeStraw water bottle, which will both hydrate and add an extra layer of Mexico water filtration — so you don’t get the dreaded Montezuma’s Revenge on your Tulum vacation!

What do I pack for Tulum glamping?

Tulum Mexico, and the Yucatan Peninsula, have a tropical climate. As you can see by the average yearly Tulum weather chart above, this part of Mexico is hot (and humid 😥) for most of the year, so definitely pack a LifeStraw Filterable Water Bottle. Mosquitoes are also an issue, so don’t forget your eco-friendly bug spray, and bring reef-safe sunscreen so you practice responsible tourism in Mexico.

As far as how to dress — anything goes — you can dress as casual, or as extra, as you’d like. For the Tulum vibe, think flowy, tropical, breathable, cotton, and light-colored clothing; bonus points for anything that doesn’t show sweat! Besides all your summer-wear, you may use a light cardigan at night and comfy sweats to sleep in, but Tulum is the place for sundresses and bathing suits.

Final Thoughts: Tulum Glamping

Tulum glamping is a wonderful way to enjoy this Mexico beach town in the Yucatan Peninsula. If you’re up for a unique experience, you’ll really enjoy glamping in Tulum. As with most things, especially if you’re a first time glamper, remember to manage your expectations so you’re not let down by the experience.

As the word glamping tells us, there’s a rustic camping-style element to this experience. This is part of the charm of glamping, and. one of the things you’ll have to embrace to enjoy Tulum glamping.

Tulum is basically a beach jungle, so there will be humidity and bugs, though there’s much less of both in the winter/spring months from about November to March. The trade off for losing out on some of that enclosed resort comfort is that you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of the natural world, and be more immersed in nature.
